Monkey Man is looking to be one of the best movies of 2024 (Everything you need to know)

In the film industry, a standing ovation after the world premiere of a movie is a huge deal. Not only does this not happen at every debut, but receiving this reaction from the first set of critics and journalists attending is the highest praise the cast and creators could ask for. This (and other reasons) are why moviegoers have big expectations for Dev Patel's Monkey Man.

On the night of March 11, Dev Patel's Monkey Man received a standing ovation after its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Deadline said it best, Monkey Man "blew the roof off Austin’s Paramount Theatre." So, what is the movie about, exactly? Who stars in the upcoming feature? And, most importantly, when and where can we watch?

Monkey Man is an action-packed story of revenge

Is there anything more thrilling than an action picture fueled by passionate revenge? You get the best of both worlds: Bloody action, but for a good cause. There is a reason for the violence, usually it's a heartwarming story, it's not just senseless killing. Think John Wick or Kill Bill, for example.

Monkey Man follows Kid, a man seeking revenge for the brutal death of his mother by corrupt leaders. The fire ignites in Kid after years of suppressed rage and trauma boil over. But the enemy is not one single person. To get revenge and balance the scales, Kid is going to need all the help he can get.

Joining Patel, Monkey Man also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Sharlto Copley, and others. The movie is Petel's directorial debut. And, as you can see from the trailer, Monkey Man is rated R for just about everything in the book -- bloody violence, drug use, sexual content, nudity, and language throughout.

Monkey Man will premiere exclusively in theaters

Excited to watch? The wait is not long at all. Monkey Man opens in theaters on April 5. At this time, a streaming release has not been confirmed. However, this is a Universal Pictures production, and most of these movies are available to stream on Peacock after leaving the big screen. Funny enough, Monkey Man was set to premiere on Netflix after the streamer bought distribution rights. Thankfully, Jordan Peele bought those rights to give the movie the big-screen debut it deserves.
