Why Saltburn is rated R, and what you should be mindful of

I will say, Saltburn is not for the faint of heart. The film follows Oxford University student Oliver Quick (Keoghan) who befriends “aristocratic Felix Catton” (Elordi), per the synopsis. With Oliver struggling to find his place at the university, Felix extends an invitation to to him, asking if he'd like to spend the summer at his "eccentric" family's lavish estate. Once there, it's a summer no one will forget.

The description doesn't sound too bad, right? So why is Saltburn rated R? It's due to some of the very graphic scenes included in the psychological thriller. And that has to do with the sexual nature. Overall according to the Motion Picture Association, the film received this age rating, which requires those 17 and younger to have a parent or guardian present, due to strong sexual content, graphic nudity, language throughout, some disturbing violent content, and drug use.

For example, there's a scene where one character is having some, ahem, alone time in the bathroom but is being watched by another character without him knowing. Then when he's done, the character watching goes and drinks the water in the bathtub as it's draining. Um, yeah. Another graphic scene involves oral sex while one of the characters is on her period. So... I don't really know what to say to that. There's a lot of swearing and the use of drugs and alcohol. And even full frontal nudity.

I understand the creative team is trying to portray the obsessive theme that goes into this psychological thriller, but do we really need this much? There's other ways of portraying disturbing elements, and honestly I don't think all of this was necessary. It's a good story, but you might want to skip quite a few graphic scenes that just are too much for some of us. Well, that's the beauty of streaming!
