Get excited, folks! Updates about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are starting to crawl in. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming movie.
At the worldwide box office, Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) gathered $465.4 million, Box Office Mojo reports. This isn't only an impressive number, it's also a victory for video game movie adaptations. The first movie is the ninth highest-grossing video game movie of all time, while its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, sits at number six on the list. One has to wonder, will Sonic 3 break another record? After all, it is introducing some important characters. And most recently, we learned that the movie will bring back a favorite.
Jim Carrey will return as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic 3
Before the weekend, Variety broke the news that Jim Carrey is returning to the world of Sonic the Hedgehog, reprising his role of Dr. Robotnik. That's right, we have not seen the last of the villain. Now, why is this significant news? For two big reasons!
For starters, at the conclusion of the second movie, it appears Dr. Robotnik falls to his death. However, it was teased that this was not the end of Eggman. We're happy to learn he'll be back, but the biggest surprise is that Jim Carrey is reprising the role. Why? Because the actor announced in 2022 that he is retiring from acting, Variety shared.
While promoting the Sonic sequel, Carrey commented "...I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.” Sure enough, the actor has not starred in any projects since Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Carrey also told the source that he would only come back if he feels as if the role offered is important for people to see, ending with "I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.” It's great to know that Jim Carrey is willing to have fun as Dr. Eggman once more.
The upcoming movie will also show James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba reprising their roles. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in theaters Dec. 20, 2024.
