Mean Girls is set to hit theaters this weekend. But is the musical remake of the classic comedy also on streaming? Here’s what we know!
In 2004, Tina Fey made a big jump from Saturday Night Live to movies by writing Mean Girls. A delightful satire of high school life, it introduced catchphrases like “stop trying to make fetch happen” and boosted Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and others to stardom.
The movie has remained beloved ever since, to the point it inspired a full-on Broadway musical. It’s that version that’s now coming out, adapting the musical version.
Fey will reprise her role as a teacher with Tim Meadows also back as the principal as a new pack of actresses take on the main roles. It looks to be a fun film for fans, both new and old, but is it on streaming yet?
How can you watch the new Mean Girls movie?
Originally, the film had been intended to be an original release on Paramount+. That makes sense, given the general audience for a movie musical is, to say the least, uncertain.
However, in September 2023, Paramount announced the movie would instead be released theatrically. It seems test audiences enjoyed it so much that the studio figured an early January release would help its box office coffers. Coming in at the 20th anniversary of the original movie only helps it.
It’s likely that when the movie eventually comes to streaming, it will be on Paramount+. That release date wouldn’t be until late spring as the streamer typically has a 60-90 day window between the theatrical and streaming releases.
So, for now, the only way to watch the new Mean Girls is in the theaters, but Paramount+ users should expect it to hit that streamer eventually for another wild ride.
Mean Girls 2024 premieres in theaters Friday, Jan. 12.
