St. Denis Medical sneak peek: Alex does her best to care for interesting patients
By Sabrina Reed
NBC is giving a new workplace comedy a whirl with St. Denis Medical, a series meant to give us that medical based storytelling we crave with a side of laughter. We'll be taken along for the ride with the staff of an emergency department located in an underfunded and understaffed Oregon hospital.
They're managed by an Executive Director who has big dreams for the medical center. Lofty ones. Enamorous. Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) wants to take their "safety net" hospital--which provides care to anyone who walks through their doors regardless of whether they have insurance and no matter their financial status--into an international medical destination. She's got the large scale model to prove it.
But given what we can see in the first four minutes of footage that NBC has released, there's no way she's making her 5-10 year goal of reaching this achievement though this isn't because of a workforce that lacks dedication. Alex (Allison Tolman), the supervising nurse seems to have the patience of a saint as she deals with a drug dependent patient she sees far too regularly and another one who wears his hospital gown open at the front because he doesn't want anyone seeing his tush.
With her co-workers, Alex is jovial. Serena (Kahyun Kim), her work wife, is inappropriately jazzed about the new nurse from Montana coming in. And there's also Ron (David Alan Grier), an ED doctor whose Postmates habit has earned him a gift card that he's willing to share with them.
In this season opener, it looks like part of the plot will be centered on whether or not Alex really is going to get off of work on time. She's scheduled to leave at 4 p.m. so she can make it to her kids' play but she's described as always putting her patients first at the detriment of her personal life so something tells me she's going to be delayed.
Not featured in the sneak peek are Josh Lawson as Bruce, the hospital's trauma surgeon who regards himself very highly. Mekki Leeper as Matt, the new nurse whose first day on the job goes horribly wrong. Kaliko Kauahi as Val, a veteran nurse who you can see dragging a huge cross on behest of a patient in the trailer. And Stephen Schneider as Steve, the hospital Chaplain
St. Denis Medical premieres Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. ET. Next day streaming will be available on Peacock. The comedy received a full season order from NBC so we can count on an 18 episode first season. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more coverage and follow us on X.
