Taylor's life-threatening storyline retreads one Bold and the Beautiful did last year
By Sabrina Reed
Soap operas retread storylines. We know this. It's not exactly a problem. They're airing new episodes from Monday-Friday for the majority of the year. But, usually, major plots aren't done again on the heels of each other. That's why it's a bit of a head scratcher that The Bold and the Beautiful seems ready to have Taylor go down the same path that Eric did when he had his own life-threatening health issues last year.
I say this because on Monday, Sept. 23's episode, Taylor told Li that she didn't want to tell her family that she's dying of heart failure. Li urged her to open up to them but Taylor was adamant that being around her family is enough and that she doesn't want to be a burden. This is the same logic that Eric was following in his storyline even after he started coughing up blood.
While Taylor's story might not get as far as being at death's door--she apparently hasn't even seen a cardiologist yet--the fact that she's sitting on this huge secret and has only told one person does mean we're likely in for repetitive "I can't tell my family I'm dying" conversations. I sincerely hope not since it wasn't that long ago we went through this with Eric but we may be in for a slog in that regard.
If the writers do have us retreading the tropes of this storyline type, I hope that there's something that's fresh in it. Will Li break her vow to Taylor that she won't tell anyone? Will someone close to Taylor figure it out? What will the drama be if that's the case? To be honest, if we bypass Taylor's unwillingness to tell her family, we could get a more fulfilling story.
It would be great to see the family rally around her. There could be enough meat in this storyline to showcase Rebecca Budig's talent as well as Jacqueline MacInnes Wood and Thorsten Kaye's. Steffy and Ridge are the closest to Taylor and we know, without a doubt, all three actors would bring it in their scenes.
All this hush hush though could be for not. It was surprising to learn that Taylor had received her diagnosis from her primary care physician but hadn't followed up with a specialist to confirm that her heart is actually failing and not that something else might be going on. The only symptom that's been disclosed so far is that Taylor has shortness of breath which is getting worse.
Thankfully, Li gave Taylor a list of excellent cardiologists she'd recommend. Now the ball is in Taylor's court to pick one so that Li can help her get an appointment as soon as possible. Here's hoping this turns out to be a misdiagnosis.
