The Last of Us season 2 production to start February 12
By Sandy C.
On March 12, 2023, the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us wrapped on a huge cliffhanger. While fans expected to be left hanging, no one thought we would be waiting this long. At the very least, production is set to start on Feb. 12, a month over a year since we said goodbye.
There are typically 12-14 months between seasons. But instead of getting another season of The Last of Us in early 2024, the wait for season 2 continues! For a while, fans were worried about the lack of season 2 updates, but in an interview with Variety, showrunner Craig Mazin shared that production on The Last of Us season 2 will start on Feb. 12, 2024.
The Last of Us season 2 release updates
The delay in the start of production is due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes that came to an end late 2023. With the strikes out of the way, production on most shows and movie projects are able to move forward. Unfortunately, this means a longer-than-expected delay for some.
Mazin did confirm that he had finished writing the first episode of the upcoming season before the strikes. However, there's still a lot of work that needs to be done. From writing the rest of the season, filming, editing, and final touches. After all, you can't rush good work! All that said, season 2 won't premiere until early 2025 at best!
Season 1 covers the first game, but Mazin teases that part two of the popular game will be told in two or more seasons. Fans of the game can't wait to see which parts Mazin will bring to life in the series, as well as what surprises they are in for. And if you know nothing about the game, don't worry! There's no need to be familiar with the original work, HBO's The Last of Us will continue to be enjoyed by all.
