The Simpsons season 36 is coming this fall: Here's everything we know so far!
The Simpsons will return to their couch at 742 Evergreen Terrace in Springfield for season 36 this fall on Fox. We'll be presented with more of Homer and his family's hilarious antics and a beer or two at Moe's. It's the place to be if you're a longtime Simpsons fan and don't want to venture elsewhere.
Season 35 wrapped up on May 19 with "Bart's Brain," celebrating another great chapter in The Simpsons' legacy and lore. The finale focused on Bart and his little "Buddy," which focused on parental responsibility and Bart realizing he has more value as an individual than he thought initially.
The Simpsons' adventures will continue as the animated comedy has been renewed through 2025. However, if not for the 2023 Writers Strike, the show would've reached the milestone of surpassing 800 episodes. With the season 35 finale wrapping up a shortened season of eighteen episodes, the count will be 768, and if season 36 has a regular order of 22, the total number will be 790.
Here's what to expect for The Simpsons season 36.
What to know about The Simpsons season 36
What to expect: The same voice cast
Like seasons before, the voice cast of The Simpsons and Springfield residents will return to breathe life into them. In addition, you can expect special guest stars, whether it's celebrities as themselves or as characters designed exclusively for them. The Kardashians star Kylie Jenner lent her voice in "Treehouse of Horror 34," playing a digital expert.
The current Simpsons cast:
- Dan Castellaneta as Homer Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Groundskeeper Willie, Kodos the Alien, Sideshow Mel, Mayor Quimby, Grampa, Barney Gumble, and others
- Julie Kavner as March Simpson, Patty and Selma Bouvier
- Nancy Cartwright as Bart Simpson, Maggie Simpson, Ralph Wiggum, and Nelson Muntz
- Yeardley Smith as Lisa Simpson
- Hank Azaria as Moe Szyslak, Comic Boy Guy, Superintendent Chalmers, and others
- Harry Shearer as Mr. Burns, Smithers, Flanders, Kang the Alien, Otto Mann, Principal Skinner, Kent Brockman, and others
Co-showrunner Matt Selman disclosed with Cartoon Base via X that he doesn't think of replacing the voice actors with age and time. It's up to the actors if they want to continue their respective roles, and per Selman's answer, it's assumed the actors want to remain part of The Simpsons' family.
The table reads have already begun
On X, formerly Twitter, The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean shared the most recent table, dated May 16, 2024. The upcoming episode is titled "The Man Who Flew Too Much" and refers to the 1956 film The Man Who Knew Too Much.
The first episiode titled has been revealed
The first episode of season 36 will be titled "Bart's Birthday" and is expected to premiere on Sunday nights in the fall. Per X, Mike Price is the co-runner, and Jess Conrad wrote the episode.
There might be more episodes
As the Writers Strike impacted airing some of season 35's episodes, they might air during season 36. In television production, the episodes are called "holdover" or "rollover," no matter the preference. If that's the case, the season could be more extended and could surpass the 800-episode mark.
We could only hope!
"Treehouse of Horror 35" will be filled with spooky pop culture parodies and spoofs
Every Halloween since 1990, we've been treated to a macabre collection of tales that spoofed or parodied other pop culture works or events. One example was when season 3 referenced the 1933 precode production King Kong, and season 13's "Treehouse of Horror 12" turned their own pages of the Harry Potter book series.
"Treehouse of Horror 35" promises to be a bagful of even more hauntingly fun spins of pop references and hilarious perspectives from the Simpson family and their writers.
Honestly, I don't know how the writers create new material annually when nearly every piece of media has been touched under the sun. Yet, 2023 was a massive year for record-breaking entertainment for movies like Barbie and Oppenheimer, so it's possible that the titles will be infused into the "Treehouse" narrative.
Seven episode titles of season 36 have been dropped
Aside from the premiere and Jean's table read with "the greatest cast in the world," the first set of season 36 episodes have been revealed:
- "The Yellow Lotus"
- "Ladies Night"
- "Treehouse of Horror XXXV"
- "Bart's Birthday" (Premiere)
- "Shoddy Heat"
- "O C'mon All Ye Faithful" (possible Christmas episode)
- "The Man Who Flew Too Much"
The Simpsons season 36 premiere date
Fans can expect season 36 to drop in the fall of 2024 on The Simpsons' trademark Sunday nights at 8 PM EST/7 PM CST, hopefully in mid-September.
The Simpsons won't be leaving anytime soon
After more than 35 years, you'd think The Simpsons would take a break and perhaps even retire, not that we'd want that. In fact, one of the elements of its success is how The Simpsons became one of TV's longest-running shows. It has become a permanent fixture in television history and will keep making history for years to come.
Again with Cartoon Base on X, Selman expressed the future of his show.
"If history has been any indication, all attempts to “predict” the end of The Simpsons have been way off. So just to be safe, I’ll confidently say that The Simpsons will someday reach an infinite number of episodes."
Fox has yet to renew The Simpsons for season 37 and beyond, and based on Selman's response, his prediction will be granted, and hopefully, soon.
You can watch season 35 on Hulu and past seasons on Disney+!
