The true story behind We Were the Lucky Ones

The book that the series is based on was written by Georgia Hunter and was released on Feb. 14, 2017 by Penguin Random House. The book tells the true story of Hunter's family, the Kurcs. At 15, Hunter learned about her family's history and vowed to tell their story and help bring her family's story to light.

We Were the Lucky Ones
takes place in 1939 Poland. At the time, the Nazi Party had grown and were planning to infiltrate the Kurc's hometown. The series will be told through the perspective of Halina and Addy Kurc. Joey King and Logan Lerman have also shared that they have a personal connection to the story, having previously discussed that members of their own family escaped The Holocaust.

Hunter's book has been received positively as well with Glamour Magazine saying the following, “Love in the face of global adversity? It couldn’t be more timely."

Even though the series is set within Poland and France, filming took place in Bucharest, Romania and Spain in both Málaga and Cádiz. These locations aren't where the Kurcs had lived but are the perfect stand-ins. For example, Romania was likely chosen because there is a plethora of beautifully-designed architecture that best illustrates the time period We Were the Lucky Ones is set in. The reason that Spain was chosen as another filming location was due to the more medieval structures in both Málaga and Cádiz. When you watch the series, you will see how each location depicts the importance of staying as historically-accurate to World War II era as possible.

With the premiere so close and all of the positive buzz surrounding the show, according to an interview with People, Hunter is also working to create a curriculum around We Were the Lucky Ones in order to educate students on the historical information within the book itself. The series has the best opportunity to be equally educational and compelling with its story being based on real life events and the author being so closely involved in the inception of the series.
