Why is Grey's Anatomy not on tonight? (Apr. 18)
Thursdays are all about the new TGIT lineup, with Grey’s Anatomy snuggled in between two first responder shows. Well, usually that’s the case. It’s not happening tonight, Thursday, April 18.
The TGIT lineup is taking a break from new episodes. There won’t even be reruns of Grey’s and Station 19. ABC is opting for a night of 911 reruns. This makes sense considering the cost of the series, and it’s the most popular show on the network. It will be interesting to see if the reruns can pull the viewers back in.
Why is Grey’s Anatomy on a break?
The big question for a lot of fans is why Grey’s Anatomy is even on a break. Why would the network want to take off TGIT for a few weeks?
Well, it’s all linked to scheduling needs. There will be an element of the show needing to film the last couple of episodes and get them through post-production in time for the finales to air. There is also the need to space out episodes due to the episode counts.
There are only 10 episodes in Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 due to the strike action from the summer. ABC will want to make sure there are plenty of episodes to air in May, which is a big time for the linear rating counts.
This should be the only break in the TGIT schedule
In some great news, when the show returns on Thursday, May 2, we should get a run of back-to-back episodes each week. There isn’t a need for another break.
There are five episodes left, and there are five Thursdays in May to fill. We’re looking at the Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 finale airing on Thursday, May 30, although ABC has yet to confirm finale dates for various shows just yet.
What to expect when Grey’s Anatomy Season 20, Episode 6 airs
ABC did warn us of this break going into it. The great news is that we know what to expect when the series returns. We’ll see Catherine Fox back, and once again, she isn’t happy with the way the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial are running things. There’s a huge donor in the hospital and she isn’t impressed with the treatment Link and new doctor Monica Beltran has come up with.
On top of that, there’s a prison inmate in the hospital. Teddy is going to be back to work, and she has Mika with her. This is Mika’s first experience dealing with an inmate who is a patient, and she looks terrified in the trailer!
We’ll also see more of a development for Webber, as he struggles to keep his focus in the hospital. This time it’s outside of the OR. Is this show really on the verge of writing Webber out?
