Could there be wedding bells coming to SWAT in season 8? Two past characters may make a return to tie the knot!

SWAT fans well know that the cast and producers were convinced season 7 was going to be the last one for the show until the renewal in April. The series had been canceled in May 2023, only for the outrage by fans to convince CBS to renew the procedural for a 13 episode final season. That was delayed by the 2023 Hollywood strikes before arriving in February 2024.

It was clear the writers were readying for the end with some major storylines, such as Luca being badly wounded in a shooting and having to retire from the LAPD. Meanwhile, Street (Alex Russell) decided to move to San Diego to head up a SWAT unit there after their leader was killed in a gang shootout.

Street’s final scene had him and Tan saying goodbye, and Street then dropped the bomb, expecting the team to show up for the engagement party for him and Chris (Lina Esco). He added to the surprised Tan to “Don’t say anything yet, especially to Chris.”

That was meant to be a good sendoff to Street only for SWAT to unexpectedly get renewed for season 8. That has fans hoping that among the plotlines will be a Street/Chris wedding. The good news is that it may happen!

Speaking to TVLine, SWAT showrunner Andrew Dettman confirmed that they originally didn’t plan on following up Street and Chris and just threw the line in for a nice wrap-up to the tale: “We did that little nod that they’re engaged, always hoping that we would have the opportunity to [follow up with a wedding].”

That followup may happen this year and fans would love it! Dettman went on to say that while there aren’t plans to bring Russell and Esco back so far, he would love to feature a big wedding.

" You know, I would love to [do a wedding]. In our minds, Street and Chris are still very much part of the SWAT family.”"

Fans have already felt a bit cheated on the wedding front. Season 6 ended with Hondo and Nichelle engaged and there was hope season 7 would show their wedding. Instead, the show jumped ahead a few months, and so season 7 revealed the pair had tied the knot off-screen. However, Dettman was quick to promise fans, “No, I wouldn’t do that,” for Chris and Street.

While season 8 isn't being billed as SWAT's final season, it could be so bringing Chris and Street back for a wedding episode would be a great touch. Thankfully, Dettman has made it clear that he’d love not just them but a few other past actors back.

"The door is open to all of the characters from the past [to return in some capacity], because I think the audience would love that and we would love that. The door is open for Luca (played by Kenny Johnson until mid-season 7) or Street or Chris to somehow work back into some episodes. I would be thrilled about that."

Fans have to wait a bit more to find out if we will see a wedding yet it’d be wonderful if SWAT gives Chris and Street the happy ending they deserve.

SWAT season 8 premieres Friday October 18 at 8/7c on CBS. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote and follow us on X.
