With the holiday season in full effect, it's the perfect time to go out and see some new movies. One of the latest releases is Wonka, the musical fantasy film starring Timothée Chalamet as Wonka. This is the third film adaptation of the Roald Dahl book so fans of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) should be happy to know, the 2023 movie follows suit with the whimsical elements seen in previous version such as musical songs and the Oompa Loompa designs. However, the film features the titular character in his early days as an emerging, charming, and seeminly over-confident chocolatier.

The film also has an ensemble cast that includes Calah Lane as Noodle, Keegan Michael-Key as the Chief-of-Police, Hugh Grant as Lofty, a Oompa-Loompa and features Roman Atkinson, Natasha Rothwell, Olivia Colman, and Sally Hawkins.

Wonka was directed by Paul King, from a screenplay by King and Simon Farnaby. The film is produced by Village Roadshow Pictures, The Roald Dahl Story Company, and Heyday Films.

If you’re wondering if your kids will be interested in Wonka, you’ll want to know what the age rating is first. Read on below to find out!

Wonka age rating

Wonka is rated PG under the criteria stated by the Motion Picture Association of America. This is due to the film including some violence, mild language and thematic . A PG rating from the MPAA means that children under the age of 17 are permitted to go see the film with parental guidance suggested. The movie is supposed to serve as a prequel so Wonka is relatively younger than how we've seen him in previous iterations.

Parents should be aware of the fact that the film is being regarded as a positive, family-friendly film that is one of the more kid-appropriate films to watch with before and during the holidays! There are moments in the film that showcase angry crowds and harsh words exchanged between characters. The film features a wide-range of ages too. One of the leads of the film, Noodle, is grade-school age and plays a pivotal role in the movie.

Wonka has already made an impressive mark at the box office having brought in $35 million before the Christmas Eve and Day showtimes. This is great news for the film and even better news for future viewers who were on the fence about whether the film was worth going to see. Bring your whole family along to the theater and catch Wonka in theaters before it leaves!
