Yes, you did hear Olivia Rodrigo in the Percy Jackson premiere. What does "Logical" say about Sally Jackson?
By Sabrina Reed
Back in September, Percy Jackson and Olivia Rodrigo fans alike were wondering why the pop star's tweet from 2020 was quote tweeted by the Disney+ original's official account with the caption: "*desperately searching for Percy bonus tracks*". Now we finally have an answer!
Rodrigo's song "Logical" from her sophomore album Guts is featured in Percy Jackson and the Olympians' premiere episode, "I Accidentally Vaporized My Pre-Algebra Teacher." This is likely a dream come true for the star who admitted she's written cringe-y songs based on Percy Jackson's story in the past.
Interestingly, her song isn't featured with the titular 12 year old but instead his mother, Sally Jackson. "Logical" plays as he sees his mother sitting outside in the rain on the fire escape. For a brief scene the camera stays on her as she takes a moment for herself. There's no dialogue but it's clear something is weighing on her. We can infer later that she was thinking about saying goodbye to her son but in the scene it's just Sally, Olivia Rodrigo, and the rain.
Given the lyrics of "Logical," the moment also feels like it's about Poseidon as well. Percy doesn't know this until episode 2, “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom," but his father is the sea god. Sally describes him as being wise and unlike anyone she'd ever known. She doesn't get the opportunity in the premiere to talk much about him beyond that but it's obvious that Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be touching on Poseidon's absence and the affect that had on the preteen and his mother.
In Greek mythology the gods do as they please and the humans who get entangled with them are often left to pick up the pieces or deal with the consequences of the gods' whims. In Sally's case, it's raising a child on her own. One who will be hunted because of his very existence as a demigod and who wasn't claimed by his father until he "proved" himself at Camp Half-Blood. So far, Poseidon is not looking great in the eyes of this series and that seems to be the point.
Sally's description of him to Percy is awed but it also speaks to her naivety of who and what Poseidon was and the world she entered that she was wholly unprepared for. She made a decision with her heart regarding the sea god and it defied logic because as a lover of the myths some part of her had to know it wasn't going to end well for her. As Rodrigo sings, "love is never logical," and Sally knows that first hand. I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to learning more about her as the series progresses.
Full lyrics to "Logical", according to Genius:
Master manipulator
God, you're so good at what you do
Come for me like a savior
And I'd put myself through hell for you
Hear all the rumors lately
That you always denied
And I fell for you like water
Falls from the February sky
But now the current's stronger
No, I couldn't get out if I tried
But you convinced me, baby
It was all in my mind
And now you got me thinkin'
Two plus two equals five
And I'm the love of your life
'Cause if rain don't pour and sun don't shine
Then changing you is possible
No, love is never logical
You built a giant castle
With walls so high
I couldn't see
The way it all unraveled
And all the things you did to me
You lied, you lied, you lied, oh
And now you got me thinkin'
Two plus two equals five
And I'm the love of your life
'Cause if rain don't pour and sun don't shine
Then changing you is possible
I guess love is never logical
The sky is green, the grass is red
And you mean all those words you said
I'm sure that girl is really your friend
Our problems are solvable
'Cause loving you is loving every
Argument you held over my head
Brought up the girls you could have instead
Said I was too young, I was too soft
Can't take a joke, can't get you off
Oh, why do I do this?
I look so stupid thinkin'
Two plus two equals five
And I'm the love of your life
'Cause if rain don't pour and sun don't shine
Then changing you is possible
(Ah, ah)
No, love is never logical
