Young Sheldon season 8 won't be happening (but the show will continue in another way)
We may be officially saying goodbye to Young Sheldon tonight with the final two episodes, closing the chapter on this part of the story. But that doesn't mean we're completely saying goodbye to the universe once season 7 comes to a close. That's because two of the main characters, Georgie and Mandy, are getting their own spin-off. And that's Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage!
The new multi-camera comedy series, which films like The Big Bang Theory vs. Young Sheldon's single-camera format, is officially going to take the place of its predecessor's time slot on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET this upcoming fall 2024 on CBS. It will feature the newly married couple with their baby CeCe as they "raise their young family in Texas while navigating the challenges of adulthood, parenting, and marriage," per the press release.
To be honest I've talked about my reasons why I don't think the spin-off is needed, but I am happy for the actors. So we'll see how it goes. Perhaps the show will manage to surprise me. It's hard to say where the story is going next since the series finale hasn't aired just yet. But it may give us a clue into what lies in store for Georgie and Mandy next. Joining Montana Jordan (Georgie) and Emily Osment (Mandy) in the upcoming sitcom are Mandy's parents Audrery and Jim McAllister, played by Rachel Bay Jones and Will Sasso, respectively. I was not surprised by this news when the two characters starting getting more screen time on Young Sheldon.
It's not clear yet whether Georgie's family Mary, Connie, Sheldon, or Missy will appear, but it doesn't sound like any of the characters will be on board full-time. Perhaps they will make cameos. In speaking with TVLine, Young Sheldon actor Iain Armitage said he would be "honored to" come back if he "got a call," while Missy actress Raegan Revord seems ready to move on. She shared with the outlet that she'll be stopping by the tapings to "go annoy Montana," but she'd like to see what other opportunities are out there for her. And we can't blame her! She's a very talented actress and I'll definitely be supporting her in any upcoming projects she has.
In terms of Zoe Perry (Mary) and Annie Potts (Connie/Meemaw), it's not clear if they'll have any roles. Potts has expressed interest in returning. But it sounds like scripts haven't been written yet, or at least not shared as filming begins this summer 2024. The actress told Entertainment Tonight, "I might hear from them to come and visit but that is not that’s not written in any kind of stone yet." I would definitely love to have any of the Young Sheldon characters pop back in, we're certainly going to miss them.
With this spin-off, of course Georgie's family is going to at least be mentioned. Especially now that Cooper patriarch George Sr. is gone (I'm not crying, you're crying). But the new series can't feel like a Young Sheldon 2.0. So it will be interesting to see how the writers figure out balancing it all out. The producing team behind both TBBT and Young Sheldon will be back for Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage. They are Chuck Lorre, Steven Molaro and Steve Holland, who also created the new comedy. What do you think about the universe expanding with Georgie and Mandy? Would a season 8 of Young Sheldon just have been better?
Stay tuned to Hidden Remote as we bring you updates about Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage coming to CBS this fall!
