The future of Grey's Anatomy is a double-edged sword.
On one hand, you have the Grey's fatigue setting in, with a handful of fans looking for the long-running show to head towards a close despite the good news of its renewal for a 23rd installment. The series had previously set a record for being the longest-running medical drama on television after crossing 21 seasons, but it seems that even the continued record-smashing isn't doing much to bring optimism.
On the other hand, with regard to the show's more immediate future, you have the future of Dr. Nick Marsh, played by Scott Speedman, that is up in the air in the season 22 finale, titled "Bridge over Troubled Water." A preview for the episode only made the situation more tenuous by showing Nick in an ambulance after him and Dr. Owen Hunt, played by Kevin McKidd, were injured by a collapsing bridge.
It's unknown whether Speedman's character will indeed meet his end on Thursday, but a feature ran by PEOPLE neither fanned the flame nor put the fire out on the speculation. Though it did provide a potential glimmer of hope for fans of the long-running series.
"There's a lot of things stacked against poor old Nick at this point," Speedman admitted when asked about his fate in the finale. As to whether Nick would actually bite the dust, Speedman was unable to give any spoilers; however, he did seem to hint that he is enjoying working on the show and would like to see that continue.
"We'll see. I don't know. I can't say anything. It's always fun to go and be able to shoot Grey's Anatomy. I love doing this show. I love those people. So we'll see what happens."
While we're optimistic about Nick's fate, the situation facing Owen's character could very well end up a little more on the bad news side of things. It was recently announced that McKidd would exit the medical drama after the 22nd season finished airing, and a tragic send-off in the finale could be on the cards as a result.
As for the episode itself? Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson, had previously mentioned the fact that several cliffhangers would make their way into the season 22 finale, with particular focus on the finale itself. Luddington indicated her excitement to simply get the scripts for the next season after commenting on the finale, meaning that fans should be in store for a thrilling, suspenseful, yet dramatic season 22 finale.
Grey's Anatomy airs on ABC and streams on Hulu.
