The Rookie might be heading into its ninth season, but the Nathan Fillion-led police drama shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. The show’s popularity just keeps rising as more and more fans continue to discover and fall in love with the show. In fact, the season 8 finale reached streaming highs for the show, setting a new viewership record!

The May 4 season 8 finale has officially become the show’s highest-rated episode in the 18-49 adult age demographic, with a 2.1 rating. Not only did the show’s season 8 finale set an all-time record in the coveted 18-49 age demographic, but the finale was also viewed by 9.25 million viewers, which was up year-over-year from its season 7 finale viewership.

As Deadline reports, not only did The Rookie end the season on a high note, but the show was up in both total viewers and the 18-49 demographic for the fourth year in a row! That means the show’s average reach has increased every season since the 2021-22 season based on multiplatform viewership totals for The Rookie! That’s no easy feat for any TV show these days, let alone one multiple seasons into its run.

A large part of the show’s recent resurgence has come from younger fans discovering the show during the pandemic and sticking with the show post-pandemic to help it become one of the most popular shows on the air. The Rookie is the No. 1 broadcast drama among adults 18-34 and the No. 1 show overall among teens 12-17 thanks in large part to the show becoming a viral hit on TikTok.

For a show to be heading into its ninth season and managing to increase year-over-year in viewership as The Rookie has done is nearly unheard of but shows the power of social media and its ability to draw new fans to long-running series such as The Rookie. With its ratings continuing to rise and its popularity higher than ever, it’s no surprise that ABC is looking to expand the franchise once again in 2027 with the launch of The Rookie: North.

Hopefully, The Rookie’s growing popularity will bode well for the spinoff and history won’t repeat itself with The Rookie: North becoming a one-and-done offshoot like The Rookie: Feds. ABC is clearly invested in the franchise, so if the viewers show up for The Rookie: North as they’re doing for The Rookie, we’re optimistic. The Rookie: North can enjoy a longer run than The Rookie: Feds!
