CBS Sunday Lineup was a tad behind after football ran a little late. Tracker premiered its fifth episode of season 4 closer to 10 p.m. ET, but it didn’t disappoint. Jensen Ackles’ Russell Shaw returned with a mysterious explanation for his whereabouts. Despite his own storylines, he calls Colter to hand him a case. Because of the case's sensitive nature, Colter has to be extra careful. During this case, Colter becomes more demanding to get answers, while Russell punches guys left and right.
Atlanta, GA—a mom, Shannon, runs a bath for her daughter, Ellie, while they wait for the dad, Grant, to arrive home. The mom goes off to do something and tells the daughter to watch the water. The dad walks in, calling for them throughout the house, but no one is home. The bathroom is filled with water from the tub still filling up.
Colter gets a call from Russell as he tries to prank him after not hearing from him for weeks. All his views that he's seeing are beside the point because Russell needs some help on a case that needs no cops and no ripples. It's the Atlanta, Georgia, missing case of the civilian contractor's dad's family. The kidnapper wants something from the dad's files. Colter has to get there fast, and Russell ends the call to handle some goats (not waves, like he told his brother).
He arrives at an unknown location in Atlanta with no phone. The dad is cautious beyond measure, but someone wants his AAR (After Action Report), and now it is connected to his family missing. He has 48 hours to retract his report, or his family is dead. The kidnappers sent him a phone of his family tied up. After that, he reached out to Russell and got out of his house in case someone was following him.
The report has no red flags, so retracting it seems crazy. If he doesn't do it, his family is dead. No matter what, he has to act like he is going along with it so his family is safe. He tells Colter he will go to the office and start the retraction process while Colter gathers information to find his wife and daughter.

Colter picks the lock at the family’s house and searches the house for hidden bugs. He gets a ping in the wall. He removes the light switch cover and takes a photo of it. He sends it to Randy, who tells him not to speak while he gives him some cover from the camera in the house. They finally speak and know the kidnappers took a lot of time to pull this out. Signs of a struggle in the house and the wife's phone, but they were taken undetected from the house.
They end their call as Colter looks for the coverage the cameras can't see outside to see where the wife and daughter were taken from the house. He followed a path into the back alley and talked to the construction company worker down the way. The people made an impression yesterday and grabbed a plate. Randy runs the plate with tons of matches until they put in a blue work truck. They land on the van, and Colter runs to the pin Randy pulled for him. While Colter is driving there, Randy tells a little bit of the case to Reenie, and he has a bad feeling about it. Russell sent Colter the case but hasn't linked up with Colter yet.
Colter finds the van, and it has a bunny pin on the floorboard, making it look like a kid was in it recently. Then, Russell and Colter almost take each other out, but they finally link up. Colter confirms this is the van that took Ellie and Shannon. As they are talking, a body plummets out of the air and onto a nearby car.
Colter chases someone up to the building’s roof, with Colter nearly falling from the side of the stairs. He's on the roof as the guy jumps to the other building, and Colter jumps, nearly missing. Russell rushes from the ground as Colter tries not to fall from the roof. He makes it over before Russell can get up there. The blonde-haired guy escapes without a trace.
They leave the roof to find out about Hawthorne and what happened with Grant. They are back to square one as Grant tries to retract his report to save his family. Grant ignores Colter's call as the guy tells him his reports will be under a microscope if he retracts his report. He holds tight, and they begin the process. They want to keep what happened to Hawthorne from happening to Grant and his family. Randy gets an address, and Colter is off to another location with no time to make a game plan.
Russell heads off to keep people from taking out Grant while a text comes through telling him not to sign the retraction yet. Grant rushes to the bathroom while an unfriendly person comes to taunt him. He tells him to quit stalling and sign. Grant fights him and demands answers. Meanwhile, we get a glimpse of Shannon and Ellie being pushed into a barn by gunpoint.
Colter snags access to the guarded location and stays looking around. Reenie calls Russell, and he knows he has to be sorry about it. But all she wanted to know was that he was okay; he is, and she hangs up. Russell goes into the conference room, where Grant is missing, and was in the bathroom for 15 minutes. A little late to the party, Russell pushes into the bathroom where the fight happened, and the unfriendly person is down but not dead. Grant was hiding out but is alive. Grant is worried he'll wait up and make the call. Russell isn't new to this and tells Grant to clean up himself and the bathroom blood as he plans to get the body out of the bathroom.
Colter holds a guy at gunpoint, not having time for a runaround. He needs to know where Ellie and Shannon are. The guy doesn't want to give up the location. Finally, he tells Colter he had a ranch, and it stays empty most of the year. Despite the guy and him probably being killed, Colter gets him out at gunpoint to show him where the girls are. The guy blows Colter's cover in the elevator; Colter easily gets control of the situation in an epic power move. He leaves the guys in the elevator for the next guest to see, who says to call 9-1-1. Hopefully this call to the cops doesn't blow his case.

He has Randy scrub the elevator fight as he holds the guy at gunpoint from the backseat. The guy doesn't think he and his team will be stopped. The greed is another weapon with a family in the crosshairs. Russell and Grant stick the unfriendly person in the trunk, take a photo, and get a location from Colter. Russell stalls the bad guys with a text and heads off to meet Colter. They have to stop Grant from killing the guy they need to find the girls.
Colter shows them the surveillance from the ranch and what they need to avoid to save the girls. The brothers put Grant in place as Russell knocks the trunk guy out. Russell and Colter drive up to the property with the guy as Grant looks over from above, ready to shoot if he has to. Colter holds his gun to the guy's back as he drives by the guards who have no idea of two extra passengers. Finally the guy tells them the girls are in an outbuilding as they fight off two guards.
Someone else takes out Grant, saying he should have signed the retraction report. Without knowing their eyes above have been taken out, the brothers take out two more guards in front of the outbuilding. They enter it and find the girls. They promise to get them out, as Russell shoots at an unknown target. They get them out, and Russell takes them to the car as the other guy holds Grant at gunpoint. Colter holds them at gunpoint and takes them out. Grant gets away and back to his family.
Reenie gives the brothers a call and lets them know she's taking care of the legal side of the case. Then she finds out there's a guy in his trunk. Lastly, she reminds him he has to pick a date for their dinner and see her office. He says next week, and they say bye to Reenie, as the brothers plan an outing to celebrate the end of another case.
Tracker season 4 airs Sundays at 9/8c on CBS.
