Watson has a trailer so here's what to know about the new CBS medical mystery series!
Watson looks like it's going to be a fantastic mix of genres for CBS and here's what to know about it!
There have been scores of TV shows based on Sherlock Holmes, including CBS's own Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller as a modern version of the iconic detective. This take was interesting with Lucy Liu as Joan Watson, a very capable assistant to Sherlock and a good detective in her own right.
Now, CBS is going back to the well with the upcoming Watson which looks like an interesting mix of the Holmes mythos and the Fox series House (which makes sense as Holmes inspired that). The first trailer hints at the great mixing of medical and crime drama that should make this a standout show!
What is Watson about?
The show takes place months after the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes as John Watson (Morris Chestnut) is still in mourning. The trailer shows Watson seeing Holmes' death, which replicates the famous battle between Holmes and his archenemy, James Moriarty, at Reichenbach Falls.
Watson has now moved to Pittsburgh and heads up a clinic that specializes in rare medical conditions. He uses the detective skills he picked up from Holmes to search for cures with a capable team at his side. But when Moriarty reappears, Watson has to once more call on his crime-solving skills.
"One year after Holmes' apparent death at the hands of his archenemy Moriarty, Watson sets up shop at a clinic for the treatment of rare and unusual diseases, in Pittsburgh. Soon however, Watson must face his past when Moriarty emerges to do battle once more."
Who stars in Watson?
The big name is Morris Chestnut in the title role. The veteran actor has been a star in movie roles like The Best Man series and is well known for TV shows like V, Rosewood, Goliath, and The Resident. He looks to have the gravitas needed for the part and is surrounded by a top-notch supporting cast. That includes actress Eve Harlow and SWAT star Rochelle Aytes as John's ex-wife.
- Morris Chestnut as John Watson
- Eve Harlow as Ingrid Derian, "an aloof but highly skilled neurologist with an enigmatic past"
- Peter Mark Kendall as Stephens Croft and Adam Croft," identical twin brothers, acting as infectious disease and functional medicine specialists at the clinic."
- Inga Schlingmann as Sasha Lubbock, "a charismatic specialist in rheumatology and immunology."
- Ritchie Coster as Shinwell Johnson, "a former criminal acquaintance of Holmes and Watson who works as the clinic's administrative aide."
- Rochelle Aytes as Mary Morstan, "a noted East Coast surgeon and Watson's ex-wife who currently serves as the clinic's medical director."
When does Watson premiere?
CBS is giving the show a big premiere as it will air after the AFC Championship game on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 10/9c. It will then move into its regular time slot of Sunday, 9/8c on Feb. 16.
This is becoming a typical pattern of CBS to premiere a new show after a big event and then wait a bit before it begins its regular run. Having the AFC title games as the lead-in should mean a lot of eyes put on Watson for a good start.
With the fun mix of genres and a great leading man, Watson looks to join CBS's lineup of procedurals and be another hit for the network.
Watson premieres Sunday, Jan. 26, 205 at 10/9c on CBS.
