CBS is going back to the Sherlock Holmes well after the success of Elementary. This time, however, the famed detective and his partnership with Dr. Watson won't be at the center of the plot. In fact, Sherlock won't be solving anything as he's dead. Instead, Watson--played by Morris Chestnut--will step into the spotlight to lead the medical mystery drama bearing his name.

Showrun and executive produced by Craig Sweeney (Elementary), Watson is set in the modern era and will bring us into the good doctor's life a year after Sherlock's death at the hands of Moriarty. In this time, Dr. John Watson has taken up his medical career again and is the head of a clinic where patients are treated for rare disorders. However, just because Moriarty killed Sherlock that doesn't mean the infamous villain is done being a terror. He and Watson are destined to have their own clash of wills as the latter solves not crimes but confounding illnesses.

Watson is coming to CBS in 2025

We're in for a bit of a wait for Watson's premiere. CBS has held the series until the midseason. When it makes its debut, it'll slide into the Sunday 10 p.m. ET slot, airing after The Equalizer. Filming is set to start soon on the program. Per Hollywood North Buzz, production begins Monday, June 17 and will run through Friday, Nov. 22. But despite the show filming in Vancouver, it'll take place in Pittsburgh, PA, according to Trib Live.

As mentioned previously, Dr. John Watson will be played by Morris Chestnut. The icon is no stranger to playing doctors as he's had memorable turns as Dr. Ike Prentiss (Nurse Jackie), Dr. Beaumont Rosewood Jr. (Rosewood), and Dr. Barrett Cain (The Resident).

Joining Chestnut is Rochelle Aytes. She'll be playing Dr. Mary Morstan. Taking on double duty as one of the best surgeons on the East Coast and the Medical Director of the hospital, Morstan knows how to deftly balance care for her patients and an understanding of the business side of medicine. But, as Watson's ex-wife, she's also able to be both the voice of reason and his reality check when he begins to cross the line. There is a mutual respect between the two, however, though Morstan is appreciative of Watson's skills as a sleuth, particularly when it comes to medical mysteries, she's not a fan of his unorthodox methods when it comes to medical business.

Is Rochelle Aytes leaving SWAT?

News of Aytes' casting in Watson also came with word that she won't be a series regular in SWAT season 8. Reportedly, though she won't be returning with the main cast, the hope is that the procedural will be able to secure a recurring status for the season despite SWAT filming in LA and Watson's production being in Canada. There are no plans to write Nichelle Carmichael out of the show.
