Why Thor's abandonment issues make so much sense in Ghosts

Thor is going back to therapy in Ghosts season 4, episode 11. His abandonment issues make a world of sense.

With Thor going back to therapy, it’s time to look back at his life. Ghosts season 4, episode 11 will focus on Thor’s abandonment issues, and they make so much sense.

One thing I adore about Ghosts is that it shows just how much trauma can last. Thor is dealing with a lot of internalized negative thoughts, and he doesn’t feel like he can share them. He felt weakened by his nightmares, and a lot of that comes from what being a strong male seems to be. There’s nothing wrong with working through trauma. In fact, it’s the healthiest thing that you can do.

The ghosts are all trying to find a way to move on from their current afterlife. They want to be “sucked off,” and that means doing some personal healing and growth. We’re seeing that a lot with a few characters, including Isaac and now Thor.

Thor was abandoned for unknown reasons in Ghosts

What doesn’t make it easy for Thor is that he doesn’t know why his shipmates left him behind. He had to survive on his own for years hoping that his shipmates would realize that he was missing and return. When they didn’t, he realized that they had just left him behind, and nobody knows why.

It doesn’t seem like an altercation happened. It actually seems like they presumed he was dead or they hadn’t even realized that he wasn’t there, which is sure to leave some lasting damage. Thor’s son did end up coming back to look for him, but by then it was too late. Both Thor and his son Bjorn died in neighboring plots of land and didn’t realize for centuries.

On top of being left behind, Thor was left alone for centuries. He walked the Earth with just animals for friends—animals that he had to kill and eat just to live. Then when he became a ghost, he was the only ghost for 500 years until Sasappis died. While Thor did get to experience humanity throughout that time, nobody could see him and interact with him.

We can see just how much Thor wanted to be a part of a people again. He learned Lenape while Sas’s people lived on the land, so that when Sas died, there was someone to talk to. The extent that Thor went to so that he could communicate with someone shows how the abandonment affected him. There was no guarantee that one of the Lenape people would die on the land, but Thor took the opportunity if it presented itself.

Thor still keeps a lot close to his chest, but his story is a heartbreaking one. Ghosts has been able to focus on it with some comedy, and I can’t wait to see him work through some of his abandonment issues in the upcoming episode.

Ghosts airs on Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
