As the Will Trent season 4 finale opens, a young man is on the side of the street peeing on a dumpster as a cop shows up and orders his three kids out of the car. As the young man mentions how the cop can’t detain them as they know their rights, the officer pulls out his baton and begins to swing it as we cut to a shot from the Team Law and Team Lab baseball game.

Will is up to bat and manages to get a great hit in before striking out, but the ball is caught by Seth giving the doctors the win. Following their loss, Will, Faith, Angie, Ormewood, and Wilks head back to the precint. As they exit the elevator, they find three of the four friends pressing an officer for answwers about their friend, Lizzie.

The friends mention how their friend Lizzie has been taken by the police, but no one is giving them any answers. The officer informs the group that there is no record of Lizzie in the system as Faith notices the one teen, we later come to learn is named Nick, has taken a beating as they inform them that the cop hit him several times. Will asks if the officers used their radios, but the kids inform him they just took her and left. It's clear that the pair that took Lizzie were impersonating cops, and the GPD begins working the case.

Faith goes to sit with Lizzie’s parents and tries to get a picture of why their daughter might have been targeted. As she inquires about potential enemies, and the parents mention a nurse who was stealing pain meds and who was fired after Lizzie’s father reported her. He doesn’t think she would show up out of the blue and take Lizzie, but the team follows up on the lead just in case.

Ormewood tracks down footage from the scene, and they notice that the uniforms are definitely not APD. Wilks recognizes them as being uniforms from a TV show that films in the area. They head out to follow the lead as Angie sits down to speak with the fired nurse. The nurse points out that it was Lizzie’s father, Eugene, who was stealing the drugs and made her the fall guy. It seems he was living beyond means and in debt.

At the costume department of the TV shoot, the costumer assures Ormewood and Wilks that all costumes are accounted for. Wilks pushes to do a physical count of the costumes and they discover that a few costumes are missing. She checks security and notices a young man stealing the costumes is Lizzie's friend Nick.

Back at the precinct, Will admits he’s not been sleeping the best since Amanda’s death. Faith assures him while the feeling never goes away, the pain eventually lessens. They're looking into Nick and find that he has an apartment that has little furnishing and it also appears he's in debt with his electric about to be shut off. They also discover that Nick has a juvie record and was nearly charged with aggravated assault. They notice in his search history he was looking into four properties as a hostage video comes through from Lizzie.

Lizzie's mom notes they've not gotten any demands, but she's also not seen her husband. She does, however, reveal that she checked the bedroom safe at their home and found Eugene’s gun was gone.

As Angie reviews old records and finds that pain meds weren’t the only drugs stolen as Eugene was also stealing other drugs with no street value. Meanwhile, the others find a property Nick was looking in that matches the backdrop of the hostage video and Ormewood and Faith head out to a property. Faith finds Lizzie inside with Nick and the woman who impersonated the police officer on the scene earlier. To Faith's surprise Lizzie knocks her over the head and flees with the woman, but Ormewood is able to catch Nick before he can flee.

Will and Faith introgate Nick, who it seems was searching for information into Lizzie’s dad for weeks before meeting Lizzie. They theorize he looped Lizzie in on the plan and convinced her to scam her dad. As Nick lashes out at Will, Faith spots a “V” tattoo on his neck which seems to be connected to the sex trafficking ring case Faith worked earlier in the season.

It turns out that Eugene was treating girls in the trafficking ring and was likely working in trafficking. It seems that Nick was trafficked and was a victim who teamed up with Lizzie to put a stop to Eugene’s actions. Faith assures Nick there is a better way, but it’s clear the system has failed him in the past, and he tells them about the drop they had arranged. Nick and Lizzie aren’t working alone, they’re working with others who are looking to get Eugene’s medical records to track down the rapists.

As Faith, Ormewood, and Wilks prepare to head out, Angie finally goes into labor as they review the plan and she calls Seth to come pick her up and drive her to the hospital. Faith, Wilks, Ormewood, and Will head out too the drop spot where it was arranged for Lizzie to be handed over in exchange for Eugene’s notes. The police take Eugene into custody as he notes they hav enough idea who they’re dealing with.

Eugene lawyers up as he’s more afraid of the people he works for than of the cops. They believe the traffickers sent the gunman to the scene to take out Eugene, Nick, and Lizzie to clean the mess. Faith notes that the GBI is too politically connected to make this case successful as Ormewood encourages her to find another way and she goes to see Captain Heller.

Will Trent's season 4 finale brings a shocking death

As Angie and Seth head down to the hospital, they’re waiting in at the light and excited to be welcoming their baby. That’s when things take a turn for the worst as a car crashes into the passenger side of their car.

Seth calls 911 and works to calm Angie as they wait for medics to arrive. A bystander comes over to help Seth out of the car and they go to work on opening the door to get to Angie. Seth heads to check on the other driver, leaving Angie with the bystander who helped pull him from the car as EMS finally arrive.

Angie is raced to the hospital and they race her up to the OR to deliver the baby. As she’s taken up to surgery, Seth is held back to be checked. His doctor steps away as Seth pulls up his shirt to reveal severe bruising on his side and then begins to cough up blood as he collapses.

After getting word of the accident, Will heads to the hospital and we see him passing time in the waiting room before a doctor comes to visit him and delivers what appears to be bad news. Will goes to see Angie in the room and we see her baby has arrived. We see Angie holding Seth’s ring, making it clear that Seth did not survive the accident.

Will Trent season 4 ending explained

Will helps get Angie and her baby settled in at his place, and he assures her he’ll help her get through this as he’s not going anywhere. As he gets her settled into bed, he goes to check on the baby and introduces himself and apologizes to the little one about the loss of her dad. He admits this isn’t an easy start, but he’s there for her as he promises to be there slightly terrified; he’ll probably mess up some, but he’ll make sure she’s okay and feels safe and loved.

Will calls the GPI and informs them that he’s going to need to take a leave of absence. We jump ahead and see Will’s made a makeshift nursery in his home and is helping to care for the baby as Angie grieves the loss of Seth. Days turn into weeks as we watch Will and Nico taking care of the baby, including her first Halloween which then transitions into Christmas, and we see Angie begin to finally break from her grief.

Winter turns into spring and Angie begins joining Will on the walks, and eventually we reach the day in which Will and Angies are both about to finally return to work. Angie admits that nothing feels right as he assures her she’s going to be okay.

As Will returns to the GPI a lot has changed as Amanda’s office is being prepared for the new  Chief. Ormewood arrives to inform Will he’s part of a new exchange program between the GPI and GPD; he and Will are about to be partners for the next few months.

Faith welcomes Angie back and she brings Angie in to the storage closet to enlist her help with something. As they walk into the room, Faith shows her a crime board for the trafficking case which is connected to many high power men, including a judge. Faith begins to tell her about their plan to bring the judge down, but stops mid-sentence when she opens a packaged delivered to her. Inside is a dead piglet with a note telling her to back off.

The season ends with Will noting that this means they’re getting close as the season comes to a close, hinting that the trafficking ring case will carry over into season 5
