The showrunners of Will Trent hint that season 5 will have a different power dynamic at the GBI, but who will be in charge?

Will Trent season 4 had plenty of twists and turns, but the biggest had to do with the shocking murder of GBI boss Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn) by Adelaide Trevens (Mallory Jansen). That rocked the entire GBI, especially Will (Ramon Rodriguez). Even as he tried to move on, the death of a woman who’d been almost a foster mother to him would have ramifications.

The season 4 finale ended after a montage showing Will taking months off work to help Angie (Erika Christensen) raise her newborn daughter following the tragic death of her husband, Seth (Scott Foley). When Will returned to the GBI, he was surprised to discover they were now in a special new operation working alongside the APD, meaning Will and Ormewood would be partnering up for a bit.

Speaking to TVLine, showrunners Liz Heldens, Karine Rosenthal, and Daniel Thomsen discussed season 5, and Thomsen noted how they’re excited about who will take over for Amanda as well as how this new partnership with the APD affects cases.

“The obvious one is we're all very excited about who the new boss is going to be at the GBI. I mean, it's two things: It's the casting that's really exciting — bringing in somebody with completely new energy — but it's also the story of who this person is, and who is going to not have the same dynamics that Amanda and Will had. So when it comes to the GBI, I'm interested in that, and also seeing how Ormewood can interact in that arena.”

This will tie into plotlines such as Angie and Faith secretly investigating who was connected to the ring of killers and political corruption, which can target some power players in Atlanta. However, that still leads to the question of who the new boss will be and when we’ll see them!

Right now, the GBI only has an interim director. Given that Will Trent isn’t returning until 2027, there’s plenty of time to find an actor to cast. When asked if they’re looking for someone who can be a long-term character or a season-long antagonist, Rosenthal called both ideas great.

“We're wide open to both things. We haven't landed on that... I think that you always start with some sort of plan, and then you see what you're getting and you pivot. Talk to us at the end of next season, and we'll let you know whether this person who just got arrested and taken away in handcuffs or the person who just got promoted and is going to be around long-term was a plan or a pivot. [Laughs]”

Thomsen suggested a running gag based on the sitcom Murphy Brown, where every episode ends with the GBI director being fired. That may not happen, yet it sounds like whoever takes over will make Will Trent season 5 even more dramatic than last year was.

Will Trent is streaming on Hulu.
