The Marvel’s Agents of Shield season of Ghost Rider, LMDs, the Framework, and Aida is over. Whatever is coming next could be out of this world.

More from ABC

The fourth season of Marvel’s Agents of Shield went out with a bang last night. There were twists and turns, a demon possessed Phil Coulson, and yet another Shield base abandoned. They tied up a lot of loose ends. The DarkHold is now ‘safely’ hidden away in some hell dimension by Robbie Reyes, Aida was destroyed, and the framework has been shut down for good.

The only threads left dangling are the fate of the Superior robots that Aida built and the status of the team itself after that mysterious teaser at the end of last night’s episode.

I have a theory.

In the final moments of the finale episode, Coulson and his team are caught by what seems to be a team of government soldiers sent to hunt them down after the events that Aida caused to make them all look like terrorists. Instead of just arresting them, the agent in charge uses some sort of device to basically freeze the team in time and talks about only having so much time before the window closes. Then, after the last commercial break we return to see agent Phil Coulson in an odd looking bunker type room. He puts on his boots and walks to the window. There we see him looking out into what appears to be the vast reaches of outer space. Coulson states that, “It’s time to get back to work,” and leaves the room.

A Space Oddity

Where are Coulson and the agents of Shield now? Well, my theory starts with the new Inhumans show coming to ABC next year. We know that the royal family of the Inhumans will become major players in the Marvel Tv landscape, but where have they been and where are they coming from? It could be outer space. It makes sense to link your Marvel shows together when a new one is launching and Agents of Shield could help launch the Inhumans.

So many spies, so little time.

There is an organization in the Marvel universe called S.W.O.R.D., it stands for Sentient World Observation and Response Department. Sword’s job is basically the same as Shields except it protects the world from extraterrestrial and otherwordly threats. It was created just a few years ago in the Astonishing X-men series written by Joss Whedon. The same Joss Whedon that executive produced Agents of Shield and whose brother Jed Whedon is a head writer for AOS. The Sword agency has shown up in the animated Marvel shows, video games, and even a deleted scene in the first Thor movie.

The headquarters of the interstellar agency is called the Peak, it is a satellite in outer space orbiting the earth; it might very well be where agent Coulson was at the end of last night’s episode. Sword is run by an agent named Abigail Brand and they haven’t gotten along all that well with Shield in the comics, but this new teaser could be leading to the introduction of a whole new corner of the Marvel Universe.

It’s possible that agent Brand took note of how Coulson and his agents handled Aida and the Ghost Rider then decided this was a good moment to recruit them. If this is true, then it would make a nice entry point for the Inhumans royal family to interact with our Agents of Shield. It would set completely new ground for AOS to mine for stories in its fifth season. We still don’t know very much for sure about the next season of Agents of Shield, but it looks like the Sword and Shield of the Marvel world could be teaming up to welcome the Inhuman royal family to the party.

Marvel’s Agents of Shield airs on ABC and will return next year on Friday nights, be sure to tune in!
