At the very least, the This Is Us creator has confirmed we’ll know about Jack’s death by the end of season 2.

Good news / bad news for This Is Us fans: Creator Dan Fogelman has revealed that we’ll know how Jack dies by the end of season 2 — and a “big reveal” will happen in episode 1 — but that we’ll be left with “a whole bunch” of new questions.

How Jack dies is one of our top questions for season 2 and it’s comforting to know we’ll actually get an answer, even if it’s one that will leave us desperate to know more.

According to TheWrap, Fogelman said:

"“All the answers that people are craving will come out over the course of Season 2, and some new questions will be introduced,” Fogelman said. “There’s going to be a big piece of the puzzle told in the first episode back … all the looming questions that I’m getting asked about on a daily basis will be answered, and I think a whole bunch of new ones will be asked.”"

Jack’s death has been of overwhelming interest to fans NBC’s show since we first learned of his death in the second episode of the first season. Bits and pieces regarding the circumstances have been teased. We know Kate feels very guilty and that may be related to inspiring her father to drive (drunk) to Rebecca’s show, which set off a chain of events that swiftly led to their separation. And yet, Rebecca still wears the necklace Jack gave her in the present day, but she’s also now with Miguel.

According to Fogelman, the circumstances surrounding Jack’s death, and the timing of the reveal, have been set in their minds for a long time. Still, given the surprising popularity of the show, they have been open to adjusting their plan on the fly.
