‘Animal Kingdom’ season 2, episode 6 recap: Smurf’s deadly error

‘Animal Kingdom’ saw Smurf’s battle with Javi yield deadly consequences while J reconnected with a dear friend from his past.

Animal Kingdom created another solid episode that ended with a riveting several minutes. The feud between Javi and Smurf reached a crescendo as Javi made a deadly move against Smurf. The boys regrouped from their successful heist as the show focused on Smurf and Javi. Without waiting any longer, here is the official spoiler alert for Animal Kingdom Season 2, Episode 6 “Cry Havoc.”

Animal Kingdom started off slowly. It focused mostly on Smurf (Ellen Barkin). Smurf met her friend Jake (Jack Conley) to find that he gave Javi (Alex Meraz) information on his father’s death. Therefore, Javi ordered Smurf to be kidnapped. Jake showed off his wounds that Javi’s men delivered. He begged Smurf just to pay Javi to end the madness. Meanwhile, J (Finn Cole) and Nikki (Molly Gordon) continued to flirt with each other.

Nikki left J in the morning to bail Craig (Ben Robson) out of jail. After his night of delinquency, Nikki argued with Craig over his behavior. After Craig predictably acted nonchalantly about the entire situation, she kicked him out of the car. Next, Smurf brought J along for her trip to retrieve money for Javi. Before they got the money, Smurf visited Baz (Scott Speedman), who offered Smurf a cut of the job, but she refused the money. At the storage locker, she collected three hundred grand while J looked out for suspicious activity.

Deran (Jake Weary) experienced an uneventful time. He joined a local business group where the entire group of small business owners pitched in money to augment city services. He refused to pay despite a fellow owner’s warning that he should or else the organizer would hamper his business. On the other hand, Baz lectured Pope (Shawn Hatosy) about the dangers of his relationship. Due to his criminal record, Pope provided an easy target for police to investigate in the robbery investigation. At a meeting at the bar, Deran objected to Baz and Pope’s insistence that Deran launder the money through the bar.

At a hotel room, Smurf conversed with Jake about the meeting with Javi. When she turned away, he pointed his pistol at her. Smurf revealed that he was Craig’s father. Nevertheless, he stole the money. Smurf warned her ex-acquaintance that he will be on the run from not only Javi, but also her. Eventually, Smurf managed to reach the phone to call Pope to untie her.

After his meeting, Baz ran into Catherine’s cop friend. He stopped Baz and informed him about Catherine’s bank account. He felt that Baz was responsible for her disappearance and warned Baz about his suspicions. Meanwhile, Craig applied for a job with a catering company. He easily got the job after he held a stranger at gunpoint to pass the urine sample test. Craig told Deran about his news as the two brothers seemed to repair their friendship.

After Javi waited for Smurf to arrive, he decided to invade her home. J and Nikki nearly rekindled their romance, but Javi arrived. J tried to retrieve his gun, but Javi’s men stopped him. Javi tortured J to give up information on Smurf’s money. J reluctantly told Javi about the money around the house while the other men found Nikki. Javi tortured J ferociously and kidnapped Nikki. Pope and Smurf arrived to find a beaten J. Nikki called Smurf to ask for someone to pick her up at a location that turned out to be the area where Smurf buried Javi’s father.

After a slow start, Animal Kingdom produced arguably its most thrilling segment of the entire series. The tension during the home invasion should have had all viewers on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, J and Nikki suffered the consequences of Smurf’s actions as well as Jake’s decision. Smurf’s next move will be interesting to see play out especially since Pope now knows about the situation.
