The Magicians Season 3 will be here before you know it, but do you remember everything from the second season?

The Magicians returns with its third season on Jan. 10. There’s plenty of time to rewatch the earlier episodes before them. You may want to as a reminder of the things that happened. After all, those final episodes of the season were epic. They completed the current storyline, while setting up the events for Season 3.

There was a lot to take in between the Neitherlands, Fillory and Brakbills. Here are the most important aspects you need to remember before starting the next season.

More from Syfy

The Beast is dead, long live niffin Alice

A storyline that many expected to happen at the end of Season 2 actually occurred within the first few episodes. Quentin, Alice, Eliot and Margo managed to defeat the Beast. Well, Alice did. As time ran out, she used her own strength and became consumed by magical energy just like her brother. While the Beast was defeated, Alice became a risk.

To make matters worse, Quentin didn’t actually kill her. Niffin Alice survived within Quentin, driving him crazy and slowly killing him until he was forced to free her. The niffin went in search for ways to prevent being boxed, but all that was for nothing when she was forced back into her own body after Quentin and Julia found Alice’s shade in the underworld.

Now Alice has a lot on her plate. Magic is dead but there are creatures after her for everything she did as a niffin. Just what will become of her moving forward?

Penny was poisoned looking for books

In the hope to get magic back, Penny signed an absurd contract with The Order in the Neitherlands. Kady wasn’t happy about it, but Penny was desperate. Unfortunately, all that has been for nought now that magic has been turned off completely thanks to Quentin’s actions. Now Penny is dying and it’s not clear if there’s a way to save him.

Wait, why is he dying? Well, he decided to go into the Poison Room to look through the books of his friends. He noticed that many had 20 blank pages and couldn’t understand why. It’s very likely that those 20 blank pages were linked to the lack of magic, but so far nothing has been confirmed.

There are actually many questions about the poison, though. Will it not work now that the water from the well spring has been turned off? Does magic being turned off in the Neitherlands affect the poison’s power?

Whatever the answers, things aren’t looking good for Penny moving into The Magicians Season 3.

Margo and Eliot are friends again

It looked like the epic friendship was about to be torn apart. After Margo declared war, Eliot was the one that had to face off against the Lorian king. A magical brown out meant Eliot’s warding on his sword disappeared and Margo feared the worst. She needed to get the well spring back up and running, which meant making a dangerous deal. She agreed that the fairies could take Eliot and Fen’s child.

Nobody was happy with this and Margo was put in a dungeon because of it. However, Margo risked her life to save the baby. It didn’t work out, but she did give up her right eye to return back to Fillory. Eliot and Margo made up, Fen returned to warn them of the fairies (losing her toes in the process) and it should be business as usual. However, the fairies are after the magicless Fillory.

Quentin killed a God and access to magic

Quentin and Julia found a way to get rid of Ember, who turned out to be the one causing havoc in Fillory and beyond. He was bored of humans not entertaining him, so created his own entertainment and banished King Eliot. It could have all been disastrous, except Eliot found a way back from Brakebills, Margo made a sacrifice to get out of the fairy realm and Quentin and Julia found a way to stop the God. Well, they learned Umber was actually alive.

After Umber’s essence empowered Eliot’s sword, Quentin was able to use it to kill Ember. Two Gods down and everything back to normal, right? Well, a little too “normal.” Umber and Ember’s parents are mad and have cut off all magic. Fillory, Brakebills and many more places are now without any access to magic.

At least, that’s what everyone things. There is one saving grace.

Julia has a secret

It turns out Julia still has a little magic left inside of her. This is something that fans will likely learn more about in The Magicians Season 3, but there are plenty of theories. One of the biggest is that she agreed not to kill a certain God. Our Lady Underground pleaded with Julia to protect her son and Julia agreed. It was questionable at first, but showed that Julia could act without her shade.

She’d lost the shade after getting a magical abortion. It turned out that Our Lady Underground’s son raped Julia and made her pregnant and it would take magic to abort the demi-God.

Our Lady Underground returned Julia’s shade as a thank you, but did she return more? Is it possible Our Lady Underground offered a little bit of magic, knowing what could happen in the future?

Another theory is that a little of the demi-God’s essence was left behind. While the baby isn’t there, the power is and Julia is able to tap into that. Either way, Julia is going to become a major player when it comes to The Magicians Season 3.
