Now that Fox’s TCA Press Tour has begun to reveal details on their merger with Disney, we can begin asking the important questions. Namely what’ll happen to Deadpool’s corner of the X-Verse.

Not too long ago, Deadpool and his mutant comrades in the X-Verse had a multi-picture deal for a story spun off of 2016’s Deadpool. The sequel which’ll continue Wade Wilson’s adventures releases later this year. Though, Deadpool’s future after that is uncertain. Since the Fox / Disney merger could potentially see the entire X-Verse rebooted for integration with the MCU, follow-ups like Deadpool 3 and X-Force might not happen. A reboot might sound like too specific of a scenario but any number could see the films mentioned dropped from development. Fortunately, there’s good news for fans of Deadpool.

Even though Fox and Disney haven’t fully fleshed out their deal—or at the very least, made details public, Deadpool’s saga could survive in the MCU. If Disney makes an exception for Deadpool by allowing him to bring his hardcore talents to the MCU, it could keep his story going. One might argue that Deadpool is too mature for Disney audiences, but he might not be after all. With Disney now willing to produce edgier content, seeing Deadpool under Disney’s banner isn’t all that preposterous. If that is where his future lies, the Fox lead follow-ups for Deadpool’s comrades could still happen—just in the MCU, not the X-Verse.

Assuming parts of the X-Verse do wind up in the MCU, Deadpool and X-Force are the likeliest to appear. Unlike the main team of X-Men, Deadpool and his comrades exist within a separate corner of the X-Verse. They’re not associated with the main narrative, nor are their fates entwined in any manner. Therefore, dropping them into the MCU could happen without much confusion. Of course, there’s one aspect we haven’t considered.

Will Deadpool And X-Force Appear In The MCU?

In the scenario of Deadpool’s group making the jump to the MCU in the near future, the plot intended for them in the X-Verse could change. The story-line wouldn’t need to change dramatically, just enough to fit within the narrative established in the MCU. Although, 20th Century Fox may stipulate that Deadpool stick to his story.

While details of the Fox / Disney merger haven’t made public, there’s a chance New Fox will have stipulations on how Deadpool is used in the MCU. If that is the case, Fox will probably want the Merc With A Mouth to close out the story they intended for him before he does anything inclusive to the MCU. But after, Deadpool—and X-Force could find themselves on a collision course with the Avengers. And if we really think about it, that makes a whole lot of sense.

Having two vigilante groups like X-Force and the Avengers fight each other over the right to police the world could be just what Fox / Disney needs to surprise fans. It wouldn’t be the generic X-Men versus Avengers fight most fans expect to play out, so a plot that involves the two vigilante teams fighting could make for an interesting story-line.

Nevertheless, Deadpool’s fate is still up in the air. Until we hear more from Fox and Disney, there’s a possibility that Deadpool’s story will end after Deadpool 2. Then again, with Deadpool being such a hot commodity at the moment, Fox / Disney likely have long-term plans for him in the MCU. Let’s just hope they keep all of Wade Wilson’s hilarious antics intact. And for that, they’re going to need to bring Ryan Reynolds back.

Deadpool 2 opens in theaters on June 1, 2018.
