From what the latest trailers it looks like Black Lightning is taking some cues from series like Luke Cage and feel of future films like Black Panther.

More from CW

If you take a look at some of the newest trailers for the upcoming new CW series, I feel like you’ll get some definite vibes of Luke Cage or the Black Panther previews that have been so popular and that isn’t a bad thing. One of the strongest elements of the Netflix series Luke Cage was the street level heroics of the downtrodden man just trying to make a difference in his community.

You can really feel like the creators of Black Lightning are heading in the same direction. The music and editing also look like someone pointed at the Black Panther trailers and said, “Yeah, do it like that.,” and I cannot blame them. If a CW series can channel the flavor of those Black Panther trailers with the heart of Luke Cage then I think it will definitely be something I want to watch every week.

Family Matters

This new promotional photo of the character known as Thunder was recently released and I think she looks undeniably awesome. The close-knit family angle of Black Lightning also shares some similarities with Black Panther and his royal family. The new series focusing on a family of heroes differentiates it quite a bit from the current CW Arrowverse shows.

There is nothing wrong with this new series taking some notes from the shows that have come before it. I hope they take those hints and use them as a structure to build their whole new world for us to watch. Black Lightning is not getting the same level of attention as some of the other CW superhero shows; maybe that will change once it premieres and everyone gets to see what this family brings to the table.

Black Lightning is set to premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 16 on the CW at 7/8 C, be sure to tune in.
