The first season of The Orville was a massive success. How does the show advance and improve? What do fans want to see?

Seth MacFarlane has a hit on his hands with The Orville. Ratings have been great. With an 8.5 from TV.com, a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.9 on IMDB, it’s clear there is a mounting fan-base.

So what’s in store for Season 2? Anticipation is high, and since it’s sci-fi the possibilities are limitless. Here are five directions fans want to see The Orville take in the future.

We need Earth history and updates.

Fans want to know the current status and history of Earth. Is there a catastrophic atmospheric issue like on The 100? Or is it just peachy like traditional Star Trek versions on Earth? No matter the outcome, fans of The Orville want to know how Earth is looking, and what the population is doing. Additionally, there needs to be a full back story on how Earth first created the Quantum Drive.

Who is The Orville’s counterpart to Zephram Cochrane? And how exactly did diplomacy between Earth and alien races take place? Were we thrown right into the mix once the Quantum Drive was created, or did they ease us along like in Contact? Speaking of interacting with aliens…

How exactly does the Planetary Union work?

Is the Planetary Union just The Orville’s version of the United Federation of Plants? Or is there more to it? Does Earth hold a place of stature, or are we one of the less advanced, junior members? It’s clear from Isaac (Mark Jackson) that Earthlings are not exactly high on the totem pole. Furthermore, was the Planetary Union founded through war or diplomacy?

The more relationships the better.

There are a ton of relationships that need to be explored in the second season of The Orville. Bortus (Peter Macon), Klyden (Chad Coleman) and their kid require mandatory expansion. Do Moclans age like humans? Will this kid double in size within a few months? Are there any post-surgery complications?

Additionally, two blossoming love stories need to be fully fleshed out. Are Ed (MacFarlane) and Kelly (Adrianne Palicki) going to rekindle their relationship? It sure seems like that’s the direction the show is heading. Similarly, what’s going to happen with Dr. Claire Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald) and Yaphit (Norm Macdonald)? They got intimate as a result of being Cosby’d by Darulio (Rob Lowe) and his hyper pheromones, but will that just be swept under the rug?

Finally, who has been around the ship more, Alara (Halston Sage) or John LaMarr (J. Lee)? Every other episode seems to involve Alara’s love life, and thus far John has proven to be the only guy actively pursuing someone on board The Orville. After all, how else did he land the stunning Ensign Turco (Kyra Santoro)?

We want more aliens and more cameos.

If The Orville can land Charlize Theron for the Pria episode, Liam Neeson in If the Stars Should Appear, and Rob Lowe in Cupid’s Dagger, then other stars are coming. It would be wonderfully meta to see someone from Star Trek: The Next Generation, like Patrick Stewart or Wil Wheaton. Even better, however, would be someone like Michael Dorn (sans-makeup) as an non-Klingon character. It would be slightly less self-referential.

Or perhaps one of The Orville characters could cameo as an alternate character? Maybe Mark Jackson could play a human officer who has an issue with Isaac (obviously played by Mark Jackson) being an officer on The Orville? Conversely, Adrianne Palicki could be an alien female that competes with Commander Kelly Grayson for Ed’s affections. The possibilities truly are endless.

There needs to be a singing episode.

Plain and simple, we need to hear Bortus sing. He was about to show the pipes on “Cupid’s Dagger,” and never got his chance.

On top of Bortus, it’s obvious from Seth MacFarlane’s career with Family Guy and American Dad that he loves music. Add in the incredibly talented Scott Grimes and the episode has plenty of content. In fact, Grimes has mentioned his desire to do an episode where an alien race only communicates via singing. So maybe Bortus will get to sing in a future episode after all.

Next: Scott Grimes wants an all singing episode
