The director of Deadpool is reportedly working on a Kitty Pryde solo film and she is one of the best choices of all the X-Men out there.

The character known as Kitty Pryde or her code name, Shadowcat, is one of the somewhat lesser known X-Men. Among comic book fans though, she is quite popular. We’ve already seen her appear in several of the 20th Century Fox X-Men films, played by a couple different actresses. Most notably, she was played by Ellen Page in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

There has no announcement over whether or not Page would consider returning to the role, but I think at this point the character could easily be recast if they wanted to. Some people may question the choice of Pryde over characters like Storm, Rogue, or Jean Grey, but I think there are some good reasons why she deserves a solo film.

Budget Constraints

If you look as the success of the Deadpool, you’ll find that one of the reasons it blew the doors off was because it was made for so little compared to modern superhero movies. A Kitty Pryde story, and her phasing powers specifically, could be told and displayed for a relatively smaller budget. Honestly, the formula that built Deadpool could be followed here with a couple character cameos and an exciting personal story for Pryde. You could even have Colossus show up as a supporting character again. I mean Kitty and Colossus have a massive background in the comics to mine for romantic intrigue.

Creative Action Sequences

If you think about movies like Ant-Man, one of the biggest selling points was the unusual and unique way they created action sequences. A character that can phase through almost any object or surface creates the opportunity for something really special. In the past, they have basically just used her powers as a neat way to escape capture, but in the comic books Kitty Pryde can do quite a bit more. She has the type of control that allows her to phase certain portions of her body while others remain solid. She can be hiding in a wall and reach out to slam someone’s head into the same wall. Kitty Pryde doesn’t even have to dodge an attack as long as she phases through it.

Endless Possibilities

As a member of the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy, Kitty Pryde has been involved in a ton of different stories. She has dealt with evil mutants, alien invaders, and even demon possession. Pryde was actually once possessed by a demon ninja that enabled her to learn a lifetime’s worth of ninjitsu, karate, and aikido. She later learned krav magra on her own. You could tell a spy story, an alien invasion, or take the X-Men into the world of the supernatural. We already know the New Mutants movie will lean towards the supernatural horror genre.

The female superhero film has always been an elusive creation. Hopefully, now that Wonder Woman blew away expectations, we will start to see more and more of them. We know that Marvel is working on Captain Marvel, Sony is putting work into Silver and Black, and now Fox could delve into the world of Kitty Pryde.
