In Supergirl’s return this week, we’re introduced to the Legion of Super-Heroes.

More from CW

With Supergirl in a coma, Reign is running rampant. While she’s stopping criminals, she’s doing so in a much harsher way that Supergirl does. She even throws one through the window at CatCo just to send a message. Right before she does so, though, we get a brief moment with Lena and James where Lena refuses to lie like the rest of her family, even if it’s just about her relationship with James. She also still hasn’t put it together that Kara is Supergirl even though they’re both not showing up at the moment.

J’onn mentions the Sundown Protocol, which is made for taking down Superman if it were ever deemed necessary. This is something similar to what we’ve seen before in comics, TV shows and films. The only difference is that it’s usually Batman who is keeping the kryptonite handy should Superman ever go rogue.

Braniac-5 (Querl Dox) is one of the members of the Legion who we get introduced to this episode. At the start of the episode, he’s communicating with Supergirl while she’s in a coma and let’s the others know that she’s fine, but angry. He communicates with her a second time to check for brain damage and she thinks she’s ready to wake up.

The way Braniac-5 communicates with her in her subconscious is entertaining. He’s excited to meet her and she thinks him being there is torture. Braniac says she’s keeping herself in the loft, but her subconscious is saying otherwise. When Supergirl starts trying to blast her way through the door, we get a scene that has some Eleven from Stranger Things vibe. Things just go flying around the room, which is something Eleven can do with her mind.

Mon-El wants to help, but can’t because of future events that need to remain in place. But in the meantime, J’onn needs to act as Kara (again) because James accidentally sent Lena to see Kara. The scene overall is pretty funny because Kara is supposed to be sick with the flu and J’onn is not able to imitate her personality very well at all. It gets even worse for him when Lena brings up James, but funnier for those watching. It’s a nice little break from the seriousness of this episode.

The DEO staging a bank robbery to draw out Reign is pretty clever. However, it does not go over well for them, especially Alex. There’s something different about Reign in comparison to Supergirl. When Reign took her down, it felt as though Supergirl barely stood a chance. That should have been the first hint that maybe kryptonite wouldn’t affect her in the same way.

It isn’t until about two-thirds of the way through the show that we finally see the Legion actually suit up. They’re the only hope that the DEO has while Kara is still in a coma. Mon-El and Saturn Girl sure love their Bon Jovi moments in this episode, too. The name comes up twice and “Livin’ On A Prayer” is playing at the approach Reign.

While it’s never much of a surprise when Supergirl saves the day, it would have been interesting if the Legion and J’onn hadn’t needed her to save the day. With Saturn Girl, we saw her powers briefly when she sent weights flying towards Reign, but it feels like there’s so much more we could see from her.

The end of the episode brings a sisterly moment with Kara and Alex hanging out at the loft. Kara is signing her cast and she updates Kara on the conversation that J’onn had with Lena. Reign makes her way back to the dark Kryptonian who has been guiding her and it turns out Thomas Coville isn’t quite who we thought he was. It’s a decent cliffhanger, but there was always something off about him since he was first introduced.

Supergirl airs Monday nights on The CW. Be sure to tune in!
