The Gifted Season 2: Will Dr. Campbell (Garret Dillahunt) return as AHAB?

With the conclusion of The Gifted’s first season ending on a seemingly grim note for Dr. Campbell, he may yet survive his latest setback. Although Campbell’s return will likely see him come back with cybernetic components—much like his comic counterpart.

After The Gifted concluded its first season with Polaris tearing the engines off of Dr. Campbell’s plane, crashing it nearby, any reasonable person would assume everyone on-board is dead. But, that may be too premature of a theory to rely on. While the audience didn’t get to see the plane actually crash, there’s a chance that it wasn’t the end for everyone on-board.

Reasonably speaking, since Polaris tore off the engines (the most explosive part of the plane) before it crashed, Campbell and the others have a better chance at surviving. Without the explosive component, it would just be a matter of not tearing the plane apart on landing. So as long as the pilot was capable of landing the plane, Dr. Campbell (Garret Dillahunt) could’ve survived.

Assuming Campbell did survive, he probably won’t escape the crash unscathed. If so, he might need more extensive medical attention than he did after his encounter with Reed’s father. There’s even a chance he’ll require prosthetic limbs. Campbell’s comic counterpart did undergo a similar procedure, becoming somewhat of a cyborg in the process.

Additionally, the prospect of Campbell becoming the mutant hunter after suffering in a catastrophic plane crash would give him more reason to take his vigilante crusade to the next level. He’s already shown that rules and regulations don’t apply to him, so I could definitely picture Campbell a.k.a. Ahab taking the fight directly to the Mutant Resistance. Keep in mind that Campbell is going to have some dangerous mutants to contend with now that Polaris and Esme have officially reassembled the Hellfire Club. Of course, that all depends on whether or not Polaris decides to help the Mutant Resistance against Campbell’s mad plans.

Nevertheless, we’ll still have to wait for confirmation of Dillahunt returning to play Dr. Campbell before theorizing on the context he’ll return under. He has yet to state whether or not he’s reprising his role so that leaves in the dark. Hopefully he does return because I personally want to see Dr. Campbell become the maniacal Ahab.
