Consider this: A Spider-Man appearance in Marvel’s Netflix universe

Consider this is a column that will dive into hypothetical scenarios in film and television. Some will be realistic, while others might be more of a stretch.

What if Spider-Man made an appearance in Marvel’s Netflix Universe? I previously wrote about wanting a She-Hulk Netflix series and maybe I’m getting a bit greedy with now wanting Spider-Man to appear, but he doesn’t need a full series. I’d simply be happy with an appearance just to confirm that the MCU at-large does exist in this same universe.

In fact, it doesn’t even really need to be a full on Spider-Man appearance. I’d settle for one of the heroes bumping into Peter Parker on the street. But, Spider-Man would certainly make for a more fun appearance. Here are a few options on how they could make this happen.

Even though Jessica Jones season 2 is already wrapped (and has a new trailer out), wouldn’t it be great if Jessica looks out a window and sees Spider-Man just slinging by? She’d make some remark like “Who the hell was that?” or “I need another drink.” That’s really all it would take to tie the films together with the Netflix shows. Plus, it’s likely much easier to get Tom Holland to appear than someone like Robert Downey Jr., who would cut into the budget quite a bit more.

Spider-Man could also have a comical appearance in Luke Cage, even though it’s less likely since they reside in different areas of NYC. Let’s say Spider-Man is following a big bad to Harlem. Spider-Man gives said villain a nice punch that sends him flying. Luke and Claire could witness this and their exchange would go a little something like this:

Luke: “And I thought I had seen everything. Look at that guy, he’s half my size!”

Claire: “Nothing surprises me at this point.”

The biggest stretch would be to have Spider-Man team up with Daredevil. Charlie Cox said he’d like to see it happen and there’s a precedent for it in the comics. You can check out this trade paperback that conveniently collects various issues in which Spider-Man and Daredevil team up. Now that the Hand is (hopefully) done with, Daredevil could see Wilson Fisk again and Spider-Man has a history with him, too. It could be a ripe opportunity for a team up.

The red tape surrounding all of this is of course the fact that Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man. Marvel Studios gets to borrow him for the films, but there’s no indication that the deal extends to the TV studio. That said, it’s still a fun idea to toss around and Spider-Man would be a great character to use in order to connect the two universes, should Marvel ever really want to do so visually on the screen.
