While romance films have an audience, some of us do our best to avoid watching them. For those of us seeking a loophole, here are some superhero movies with love stories to watch this Valentine’s Day!

The big romantic holiday is coming up, and for the people who need solace from another night of watching The Notebook, a heroic opportunity can now be found. Below is a list of films that have romantic subplots within the superhero genre for men and women to enjoy.

But first, here are a few Honorable Mentions: Thor, Superman, and Spider-Man 1 and 2.

#1 Deadpool

This is the most obvious pick but it felt wrong leaving him out. Deadpool is definitely a love story. It’s basically The Count of Monte Cristo if “The Count” made sex jokes and broke the fourth wall every five minutes. Also just like “The Count”, Wade Wilson seeks vengeance on those who took his life away. This all unravels in a comedically violent journey taking him all the way back to the arms of Deadpool’s love, and the journey is absolutely glorious.

#2 The Mask

Most people wouldn’t consider The Mask to be a superhero property, but you would actually be wrong. The character adapted from a Dark Horse comic is an anti-hero much like the character Deadpool. The difference is the 1994 film watered down the source material and turned it into a silly Jim Carrey comedy. So, how does this film work for Valentine’s Day? Well, beneath the silly slapstick surface is a romantic subplot about the underdog trying to get the girl. Jim Carrey’s character, Stanley Ipkiss has a terrible car, a boss that never gives him respect, and a hateful landlord. Plus, he has a mad crush on Cameron Diaz. Once he finds The Mask, he develops powers that are extremely out of this world. Boy meets girl… Boy wants girl…Boy finds mask… Boy becomes a live-action cartoon character… And well, I think you get the picture.

#3 The Incredibles

This pick is dedicated to all the married couples. The Incredibles might not be a love story, but it’s a film that touches on themes about marriage and family. The central character Bob– Mr. Fantastic– struggles with getting older and having a career he hates. He then returns to being a superhero against the wishes of his wife, Helen, which leads to putting his family in jeopardy. The result is a charming animated movie that highlights the magic of married people working together, making this one of the best films by Pixar.

#4 Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Okay, I’m kind of cheating here. Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog might not be a movie per se but since its conception, the 3-part series has been combined into one story on various streaming formats, making it feel like a movie.

For those, who are not aware, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is the brainchild of Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), which stars Neil Patrick Harris as the evil Dr. Horrible. The story centers on his love for Penny (Felicia Day) who also is being pursued by the arrogant superhero Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). Did I also mention this is a musical?

Combined with humor and tragic elements, this experimental Joss Whedon treasure is a perfect superhero show to enjoy during a date night.

#5 Wonder Woman

Patty Jenkins did the impossible and somehow made Wonder Woman a force to be reckoned with in 2017. Not only that, but she killed the film by executing a well-crafted love story within it. Take away all the superhero elements and what you have left is a solid romantic period piece based around World War 2. The chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine is fantastic, and they both sell the romantic elements with superb fashion. Mix all of this within the action of the film and this is by far the perfect superhero film for guys and girls alike.
