Sony Pictures has finally released a first look at the upcoming film based on the Marvel character known as Venom.

More from Movies

Venom is one of the many characters caught in the ownership limbo between Marvel and another studio. Sony Pictures still technically owns most of the characters from the world of Spider-Man and his rogues gallery. They may have been persuaded to share Spider-Man with Marvel Studios, but they are showing no signs of giving up on the comic book genre.

It has been speculated that Spider-Man might show up in the film as a cameo at some point. Originally, Kevin Feige made it clear that Venom would not be part of the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe and then a Sony Pictures representative said it would be. It has been stated recently that the Venom film will take place in its own separate universe.

The alien symbiote known as Venom has taken many forms and had multiple hosts, but its first and most well-known was Eddie Brock. Tom Hardy is a pretty big star to be cast as Brock for a movie that many doubted would actually get made. Michelle Williams also makes a small appearance in the trailer as Anne Weying. In the comic book world, Anne is Brock’s ex-wife that one day becomes a host for the Venom creature as well.

The trailer is very much a tease in that it does not give much away. The narration and the many scenes within a hospital make it seem like Brock is either ill or becomes seriously injured in some way. His original origin story comes from the fact that Eddie Brock hated Spider-Man and was fueled by his jealousy. He came into contact with the Venom creature from another world and it bestows with powers similar to Spider-Man, but along with that it brings the bloodthirsty psychosis of an alien monster.

Venom, as a character, has gone from villain to hero and back again more than once. Riz Ahmed has been cast as Dr. Carlton Drake. We do see him looking quite sinister with some scientist looking extras and a container that looks to hold the Venom symbiote. If they follow his story then he will definitely be the villain of the film. In the comics, Drake originally steals a small sample of the symbiote and uses it to create more creatures that he could attach to other people and control himself.
