Here is a story that will be interesting to follow in the days to come. Variety is saying that Todd Phillips is meeting with Joaquin Phoenix to star in the standalone story of the Joker. There are no confirmed details as of yet, but Variety also suggests that Phoenix is the top contender for the role and has actually agreed to be in the film.

If true this is a surprising move by actor Joaquin Phoenix who once stated he did not have an interest in the comic book genre. Which begs to question… What makes this project such an exception for him?

The Joker does require a special attention to detail that seems rewarding for most actors. Heath Ledger once said it was “the most fun” he ever had playing a character. So, one can possibly assume the prospect of making the Joker character his own intrigues Joaquin Phoenix. Especially for an actor like him, that seems to enjoy complex character work.

Plus, Phoenix has tremendous experience with playing villains and usually knocks it out of the park.

The film currently does not have a release date. Martin Scorsese is still an acting producer on the project with Todd Phillips (The Hangover) onboard to direct. Little is known about the plot except for a slight rumor about it possibly taking place in the 80s. It sounds like a mixture of Scarface and The Dark Knight, which honestly thinking about the potential of that makes my head explode.

This movie will not be considered as part of the DC Extended Universe, which includes all the films centered around Justice League. In other words, do not expect a younger Ben Affleck to make an appearance.
