The brilliant horror film The Grudge has been in talks to receive a reboot for years, but news has now surfaced that suggests we could see the horror legend very soon.

More from Movies

The Grudge was originally a remake of the 2002 Japanese film Ju-On, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar who effortlessly portrayed the lead role. The film’s tonal approach helped the movie to go on and spawn a sequel in theatres, as well as a direct to video follow-up chapter. Now, Deadline has reported that Ghost House Pictures has enlisted Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother) to pen the reboot film and Andrea Riseborough (Black Mirror) has been tapped to play the lead role.

The actress’ character is said to be a “detective and young single mother,” who would obviously come into direct contact with the frightening spirits that plague the franchise. The award winning British actress has stared in several films such as Birdman and Battle of the Sexes, so it could be interesting to see Riseborough take on a horror role as her next cinematic project.

When announced as a reboot in 2014, I wasn’t sure that it was a good idea since the reboot trend had seemingly failed, but enough time has passed and it could be interesting to see what The Grudge holds in a present day setting. One consistent plot point of both the Japanese and US version is that it tells a tale of a vengeful curse that kills anything in its path, however it hasn’t been confirmed or denied if it will utilize the same ghosts as before. From the corpse-like woman with jet black hair who toys her victims – to the young boy with feline tendencies, the film created instant horror that still contains some of the genre’s best moments.

The 2004 film and 2006 sequel have certainly stood the test of time, so here’s hoping that Ghost House Pictures will make sure to create that same suspenseful atmospheric direction that worked so well.
