War Machine aka Colonel James Rhodes

War Machine’s death was already sort of teased during the Captain America: Civil War marketing, but that ended up being another misdirect as he was only wounded. This time around, Rhodey’s death could occur as he leads a possible military first strike against Thanos when he arrives on Earth, resulting in his decimation by the tyrant.

Rhodes (Don Cheadle) is an easy character to kill off without disrupting the existing status quo. He has thus far been a relatively unimportant character within the MCU, only showing up in the background as needed during the more ensemble sequences of the films. He’s also an auxiliary Avenger who, unlike Hawkeye, doesn’t even have any side relationships with characters other than Iron Man.

However, Rhodey still is connected to the birth of the MCU with the first Iron Man movie, so his death would have some impact on the nostalgia of loyal audiences. He’s also one of few characters whose death can stir Tony Stark’s emotions enough, if so required as a plot point in Avengers: Infinity War.  Seeing Don Cheadle leave the MCU would be mildly sad, even if, it ends up being ultimately meaningless.
