This Is Us hinted Toby might be dying, but here’s why Kate can’t lose him

In the Season 2 finale, This Is Us previewed health complications for Toby in the near future. Will Kate soon be losing her husband, too?
No amount of time will ever properly allow This Is Us fans to recover from the Season 2 finale. In the heartwarming — but also heartbreaking — hour, the series threw a beautiful wedding at the family cabin. Apart from a bait and switch that had us fearing Kate would leave Toby at the aisle, it wasn’t the wedding that left us talking.
After the wedding concluded and both Pearson men delivered thought provoking toasts, This Is Us flashed to the near future and the future future for a trio of gut-wrenching cliffhangers. First, Kevin jetted off to Vietnam with a new love interest, then future Randall mentioned a mysterious “her,” and finally, Kate sat at Toby’s bedside. What could it mean?
Considering Toby’s mother used his mental health against him in an effort to get him not to marry Kate, Toby could potentially be suffering from depression. We know that his first marriage weighed heavily on his mental health and pushed him to depths he almost fell victim to. However, there was also a rumor floating about another character dying.
Of course, all rumors should be taken with a few thousand grains of salt, but just for kicks and giggles, let’s entertain it. The rumor stated a major character would be diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sure, we never saw this twist come to fruition, and there’s no reasonable argument why the internet would know this before it’s even on the show. But is it true?
Next: Here’s what we need more of in This Is Us season 3
Kate mentioned Toby’s medication as she sat at his bedside. She could be referring to antidepressants or whichever medications his psychiatrist has him on for depression. Still, that rumor rings in the back of our minds. This could be a lot worse, but Kate cannot lose Toby, too. Letting go of Jack in order to get married to Toby took Kate enough time. Why in the world does she need to lose her husband as well?
The short answer: She doesn’t, and it would be unnecessarily heart-shattering to witness Kate suffer that trauma. Here’s to hoping This Is Us has something much less tragic planned for Toby in Season 3. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
