Does anyone really want a Men in Black reboot? Is it necessary? Are there no new ideas?

More from Movies

Hollywood didn’t learn a thing from Independence Day: Resurgence. Unfortunately, there is a Men in Black remake in work. The sequel will feature Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth trying their hardest to recreate the chemistry they had in Thor: Ragnarok.

If Will Smith and TLJ were J & K, respectively, then we can only hope those spreading the news of the Men in Black reboot are also JK. Enough with the reboots. To be quite honest, maybe their characters can be L & M, because redoing Men in Black sounds lame. Jaden Smith’s face is how just about everyone should feel about a Men in Black homage that doesn’t include his incredibly talented, “hard to believe he’s related to Jaden”-father, Will Smith.

There is a major casting issue.

In and of itself the casting of either Hemsworth or Thompson is fine. Seeing the two together, however, is like casting Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. Or Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen.

They can expand on the previous universe all they want. They can even include some subtle jabs or Easter eggs referencing Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. It won’t matter because everyone will be wondering if Thor and Valkyrie are ready to fight Loki, Hela, or some random Asgardian monster.

There are a few positives.

For the glass half full optimists, there may be reason to cheer. First, F. Gary Gray is slated to direct. He’s been on quite a roll lately with Straight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious. Furthermore, Steven Spielberg will be the executive producer.

Additionally, current FX is much more advanced and sophisticated. Fans deserve so much more than the ridiculously wonky aliens from the original trilogy. Indeed, the lame aliens are agonizing upon rewatching any of the original films. It’s like comparing the special effects in the original Planet of the Apes to the most recent sensations. Or the original Clash of the Titans versus the remakes. For example, the Ballchinians look atrocious. For that reason alone, the remake of MIB may make sense, but otherwise there isn’t much else about which to be excited.

Above all, fans want good movies. With this in mind, we can all hope it works. Although, it would probably be better to just cast two other people and merge Men in Black with the Marvel Universe. Win win. Then again, that would conflict with S.H.I.E.L.D., so maybe a reboot is still unnecessary.

Men in Black is slated for a Summer 2019 release.
