10: Swiss Army Man (2016)

Directed by The Daniels

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano

We’re starting off this list with a bang, or more appropriately, a fart. As crude and immature as that opening line may or may not be, it’s a line that seems to perfectly capture the nature of this strange buddy comedy.

Swiss Army Man starts out simple enough: a man (Paul Dano) is stranded in the middle of nowhere and contemplating suicide. His suicidal tendencies manage to fade after he finds a body washed up on the shore. It’s not just any body though: it talks, has many useful survival skills and a tendency to fart fairly frequently. Try saying that five times as fast.

Swiss Army Man exists in a strange section of cinema. Sure, at its forefront, it is a comedy with literal toilet humor, but it also contains instances of Cast Away mixed with some Bill & Ted similarities. A movie about a living human and a farting corpse bonding in the middle of nowhere sounds like a strange journey and thanks to The Daniels, it is just as weird as its premise sounds.

Miraculously though, Swiss Army Man compliments its sophomoric humor with great heart and a charming atmosphere that is unlike any other experience one may ever get from a film. You’ll laugh at the farting, but cry from the film’s charm and emotion.
