After the cliffhanging climax we all felt coming in last years season finale of Westworld, we begin anew in a bloodied and a vengeful Season 2.

The Westworld Season 2 premiere was a tasty, scrumptious appetizer that has certainly whet the palette in anticipation of a season looking to burrow deeper and darker than its first.

1. Make no mistake – this is Bernard’s season

While last season put the lovely (albeit now terrifying) Dolores as its lead protagonist, this season has put forward host/host engineer Bernard as our chief character. I’m hesitant to classify him as protagonist or antagonist, but that’s true of every character in this story.

We will be following him in two timelines – one along with Westworld board member Charlotte Hale as they attempt to track down a host who was meant to be delivered out of Westworld. Help won’t come to the park until the ‘package’ host is delivered – so it’s gotta be imperative. And Bernard is somehow very sick, needing to siphon liquid from other hosts and inject it into himself to survive (thankfully STD’s weren’t manufactured into the hosts). On the other timeline (current), we find Bernard shellshocked, alone and being roped in (cowboy pun) to helping the cleanup crew find the remaining guests in the park. When Bernard and the crew come across a literal mysterious sea of dead hosts – Bernard sheepishly reveals he killed them all. Even that sweetheart Teddy, who’s only real flaw is his attraction to a serial killer.

2. Dolores is on a MISSION

Dolores, you changed. Remember when you were the sweet, lovely romantic interest host that had dreams? When you were so wonderfully curious about humanity and reality as we watched you slowly ‘awaken’. Right, well you’re awake now. And awake means violent ends. Dolores is playing death games with the guests while taking down other hosts who aren’t worthy of finding ‘the valley beyond’. Paired up with her beau, good-hearted Teddy, she means to escape Westworld and bring down all of humanity. The thing is Teddy doesn’t seem too convinced of the plan and we can feel a definite showdown between these two brewing. But then every relationship has its pitfalls.

3. Bill’s never been happier!

Westworld’s first villain, the Man in Black, was revealed to actually have been the first season’s hero, William. Just all grown up, wrinkly, jaded of life and scorned from the lack of Dolores’ love. Bill spent such a long time trying to find the ‘maze,’ the supposed real game that was hidden within the park. It was the only thrill he had left. Now, he’s been left a little gift from the parks now-deceased founder, Robert Ford (yeah, he’s dead). It’s a new game, to find the door back out again, designed specifically for old Bill. Now, the stakes are real. Bill’s wasting no more time playing a glorified board game, now he’s ready to play to the death.

4. Maeve found herself a new toy!

As perhaps the most ‘awakened’ of all the hosts, Maeve was in the perfect position to truly escape Westworld for a new life. She just cannot leave without the daughter she had in a past host-life. Despite being re-programmed as a classy madame, she cannot move on from her life as a Mom. So, Maeve forces the head of narrative and chief D-bag, Lee to take her to her daughter. Lee does his best to slither out of the situation, almost having Maeve killed by some guards. She’s just too clever for that kind of rubbish. So he’s going to go into the park with her, and she might have some fun with him along the way. Maeve’s already humiliated him by making him stripping right in front of her, just like he did to hosts uncounted times. Lee, Maeve and her lover Hector are going to have a fun old trip to Westworld.

5. We’ve got more twists on the way…

I mean how could we not. Westworld’s first season through twist after twist at us, particularly concerning character. We’re a bit more grounded with a couple and now ready to explore them further, like Bernard and Bill. Yet how we can really be ever totally sure of who is who? Where did the head of security Ashley Stubbs come from? He went MIA last season, I presumed dead. Are others still alive? How much blood will Dolores shed as our new villain? Why the s*** did a tiger end up in Westworld? How many of EVERYTHING will those creepy as drone hosts kill? And what’s going on with Bernard? He’s very much our key to this season, and I believe the fate of many lives will hinge on what allegiances he strikes up.
