With the conflict between Barry Allen and Clifford DeVoe heating up, how they’ll defeat him is a problem they’ve yet to solve. Luckily, Leonard Snart ‘s return to has given the team a bit of insight on how to.

After last week’s episode of The Flash left the team one man down, Team Flash is still reeling from the loss. Barry is feeling it the most, what with Ralph’s death being the source of his guilt. Even though Barry did everything possible to stop DeVoe from killing Ralph, he still feels responsible. Throughout last night’s episode, we saw how that guilt and loss have affected Barry moving forward.

In the beginning sequence of “Fury Rogue”, Barry and Iris visit a therapist by the name of Dr. Finkle. She attempts to dig into Barry’s subconscious for him to face the grief but he sways from that realization. Finkle continues to pry into Barry but he just sidesteps the discussion by lying about how he’s dealt with it when in reality, he hasn’t confronted the truth at all. Lucky for Barry, another of DeVoe’s plans distract him from Ralph’s death.

Is DeVoe becoming blinded by his own hubris?

When the episode flips back to DeVoe, he’s a little deranged. DeVoe is back to his old self, albeit in Ralph’s body, but he’s obsessed with what he calls the Enlightenment. Marlize tries to rein him in but the mad scientist has become immersed in his work, so much so that his wife is a secondary concern. On top of that, he’s pushed aside all notions of human emotion and doesn’t see that Marlize is feeling the drawback of this obvious change.

Back at Star Labs, Cisco and HR continue to tinker with their version of the Thinking Cap. Cisco sees the advantage in using the Thinking Cap but HR dissuades him from it. He doesn’t tell Cisco exactly why but the reason is that HR’s cap has negatively affected his brain chemistry. Before he can explain, their conversation is abruptly interrupted by an alert from Tracy Brandt’s lab where Fallout is being held.

Once Team Flash learns of the dangers present, they concoct a plan to keep Fallout out of DeVoe’s hands. The only problem with their plan is that they don’t have a way to keep Neil Gorman’s radiation contained. Without Killer Frost to cool him down, he could go nuclear. To prevent this from happening, Barry ventures to Earth-X in search of Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller). Snart isn’t a metahuman but his cold-gun packs enough punch to cool the excess heat coming off of Gorman so he’s their only viable option.

Leo Snart joins Team Flash to help fight DeVoe

After picking up Snart, they return to Star Labs to give him the low-down on their plan. Snart goes along with it, all while keeping track of Barry. He doesn’t make it evident at first but Snart can see that Barry is different from the last time they saw each other. Snart still agrees to help with Fallout but it’s Barry who needs his help even more.

While Team Flash is sorting out their plan, DeVoe is busy hatching one of his own. His plans, however, don’t seem to be going as planned. Marlize is helping him as a dutiful wife should but all DeVoe wants is an assistant, almost as if his plans for Marlize have always been so. He even silences Marlize when she attempts to do something nice for him, adding evidence to claims of DeVoe becoming less than (meta) human.

A short time later, Team Flash assembles the radiation-suit for Gorman and head off. What they don’t anticipate on is Siren-X (Katie Cassidy) stepping in. She’s not working for DeVoe but her plans for Earth-1 are just as maligned considering she wants to detonate Fallout inside of CCPD.

On the road, Team Flash is confronted by DeVoe who appears to have the upper-hand despite their efforts to protect the transport. A small fight ensues but it’s interrupted by Siren-X who takes Caitlyn, Joe, and Fallout captive. Though, DeVoe is more unhappy with the outcome than Team Flash is.

DeVoe losing his grip on winning the game?

Inside of his lair, DeVoe tries to figure out what went wrong. He doesn’t understand why the days’ events didn’t play out the way he predicted and it’s extremely frustrating. Marlize attempts to explain to DeVoe that human emotion is one variable he didn’t account for, but DeVoe isn’t having it. DeVoe is sure his calculations were correct and doesn’t think he made any errors at all so he goes back to work.

After their loss at Siren’s hands, the rest of the team looks for answers to the various problems they’re facing. Cisco becomes frustrated and goes back to the Thinking Cap but HR stops him. Their discussion concludes with HR telling the truth, explaining that the cap burned out his brain.

In the other corner of Star Labs, Barry and Leo have a very meaningful conversation about Ralph. Leo gets to the source of Barry’s grief but our favorite speedster keeps making up excuses for why he can’t grieve. Lucky for Barry, Siren-X causing trouble in CCPD gives him the escape he needs.

At CCPD, Barry and Leo confront Siren-X who has Fallout in the middle of detonation. Caitlyn and Joe try to cool Gormna down but Siren stops them. The situation looks grim until Leo gives a speech that causes the courage to swell in Barry. He then gets up and stops Siren-X while Caitlyn and Joe cool Fallout down.

Barry Allen finally grieves for Ralph Dibny

After the whole ordeal with Fallout is over, Barry disappears. No one knows where Barry has gone except for Joe. He figures Barry is at Ralph’s old office and he’s right. There, Barry finally lets the grief wash over him and he confesses his guilt to Joe. But in Joe West style, he convinces Barry that Ralph’s death wasn’t his fault. Barry finally comes to this realization himself and moves past it.

In the episode’s final moments, Barry and Iris revisit Dr. Finkle to bring their discussion on Ralph full circle. During their session, Barry lets out everything he’s been holding in, from his past grievances with Ralph to their friendship. The session concludes with Barry allowing those revelations to resonate, becoming his self once again. Keep in mind that Barry isn’t done grieving over Ralph just yet.
