Overlord isn’t Cloverfield 4, but a sequel is on the way

More Cloverfield is coming our way, but it may not be the film Overlord like we were expecting from J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot.

During last week’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas, movie lovers were granted early access to exclusive footage, trailers and even news regarding some of the biggest upcoming projects. What we didn’t predict was Abrams discussing his upcoming film Overlord, a World War II film that has been rumored to be another chapter in the ever-expanding Clover-verse.

Entertainment writer Eric Vespe tweeted about the upcoming project and confirmed that Abrams himself stated that Overlord is the first Bad Robot film to take an ‘R’ rating but there is no relation to the popular sci-fi film series. He also adds that “they are working on a dedicated Cloverfield sequel right now.” which is undoubtedly Abram’s way of appeasing the very dedicated Cloverfield fan base while squashing the rumors behind Overlord.

To provide you with a little history on why this was assumed to be a Cloverfield project, the most recent film The Cloverfield Paradox revealed possibilities of an overlap between aliens, monsters and demons – a major aspect of Overlord. Overlord has been described as a film on D-Day with a strong supernatural element that’s a mysterious “Nazi experiment” so it seemed like the only direction that hadn’t been explored thus far. In addition, the Cloverfield revelation from TCP made it possible to depict different points in time each dealing with ramifications of the catalyst – so an alternate history would make perfect sense.

Of course, there is always the chance of J.J. Abrams just trying to throw us off as he has done in the past, but if his statement is true than at the very least we can expect an actual Cloververse sequel that isn’t required to undergo rewrites as a tie-in.

Overlord is expected to hit theaters on October 26, 2018, and the fourth Cloverfield has yet to be announced, so it looks like we have a few Bad Robot films to get excited about in the near future.
