The Flash recap, season 4, episode 20 Therefore She Is
By Paul Zuniga
Unlike the past, six or so episodes of The Flash, the most recent focused mainly on Marlize. Time was still devoted to the other moving parts of the show but a lot of emphases was on Marlize.
On the latest episode of The Flash, Marlize took center stage as she and Clifford DeVoe’s lives went under the microscope for insight into their past. Various flashbacks were included to explain how Marlize met DeVoe. At the same time, these flashbacks revealed how and why Marlize had actually come to loath DeVoe. She’d read his maniacal manifesto and couldn’t believe the insane thoughts rolling around in his head. DeVoe managed to explain it away and Marlize went along with his plan but her doubts have never gone away.
In between those flashbacks of Marlize and DeVoe’s happier days, Team Flash took care of some pressing matters. Harrison Wells finally told the group that his brain is deteriorating, Cisco made a tough decision regarding Breacher’s offer, and Caitlyn struggled to awaken her other half. Luckily, Barry Allen stepped up as the leader and assured them that they can still win.
DeVoe gets a step ahead of Team Flash yet again
Back in DeVoe’s corner of the world, in the present day, he’s focused on a special type of alloy. DeVoe breaks into a lab to steal what he needs and accomplishes that. Though, when DeVoe and Marlize run into an innate security guard, DeVoe mercilessly executes him. Team Flash goes to investigate shortly after but they don’t find any clues towards DeVoe’s plans.

The good news is that Barry Allen thought of the perfect solution. Having Cisco vibe the gun DeVoe used to kill that security guard would give them some clue. Cisco, however, didn’t think he could handle the blowback from DeVoe’s power so he calls on Gypsy to help.
When Gypsy arrives on the scene she’s ready to help Cisco but things don’t go quite as planned. Their plan to stop DeVoe doesn’t work and they get easily subdued. It’s then that an argument breaks out. They go back and forth for some time but it boils down to the job offer Breacher gave Cisco.
Upon returning to Star Labs, Barry discusses the offer with Cisco. He’s supportive of Cisco but Barry emphasizes how the team needs his help to stop DeVoe. They continue to work through the issues until they’re interrupted by an alert of DeVoe attacking more tech facilities. Fortunately, Barry figures out what DeVoe is building and hatches a plan to stop him.
Team Flash find DeVoe at Mercury Labs and surround him. They get close to subduing him but DeVoe gets up like he always does. When he does, DeVoe grabs Gypsy and attempts to kill her. The situation looks grim for Gypsy until Marlize steps in. She convinces DeVoe to stop but it’s at the last second. At this point, Marlize knows that DeVoe is a danger to everyone including herself.
Marlize finally escapes from DeVoe
Keep in mind that a final flashback sequence reveals how Marlize fell for Clifford DeVoe’s mad plans. Of course, that doesn’t seem to matter in the present day, where Marlize has finally escaped from under DeVoe’s thumb.
In the final segment of the episode, the mystery girl (Jessica Parker Kennedy) makes yet another surprise appearance, this time delivering a gift to Cecile and Joe West. She leaves before they can ask her who the gift is from but we see her speed off like a speedster. When she does, the mystery girl leaves a trail of purple and yellow lightning behind.

Iris West also brandished a purple trail of lightning during her brief stint as a speedster, indicating a possible connection between the two. Some of their facial features are similar as well, so the mystery girl could be The Flash’s version of Dawn Allen. Who knows, Dawn might be the one who saves Team Flash from DeVoe. If she’s from the future, it goes to reason that she knows how to stop DeVoe. Although, that’s still to be seen.
