Colony season 3, episode 1 recap: Maquis
On the season 3 premiere of Colony we catch up with the Bowmans six months after they escaped the Los Angeles Bloc. They seem to be doing well, but new threats soon emerge.
When Colony left off last season, the Bowman family had just escaped with Snyder. The Los Angeles Bloc is being wiped out so they narrowly avoided this horrible fate. On the other side of the wall they were to track down a guy named Noa with The Resistance and deliver the gauntlet to him. The problem there is that they lost their guide, Maya, before she could tell them how to find the base.
Without knowing where they were going the family has an uphill battle ahead of them but they are survivors if nothing else. They also don’t know what awaits them beyond the wall so this season will take us into a lot of unknown territory.
Life is good
When we meet the free Snyders they are living in a log cabin in the woods. Snyder is cooking for them (since he’s otherwise useless) and everyone seems happy. As the family settles in for a meal an alarm goes off and the mood changes. Katie says: “It’s early today” as they ready themselves to head for cover.

At the treeline they wait as a drone walks into a field. They are expecting it to stop at a certain point but it walks a bit further, which surprises them. When they get back to the cabin they map where it walked. You can see that they have a lot of area marked, presumably places where drones patrol. Katie says that they should leave the cabin but Will insists that they are fine since the drone wasn’t walking in the direction of the cabin and they have traps set up.
They show us a few more scenes of the family just living. Will fishing with Gracie, Katie setting traps with Charlie, and Snyder bringing back water from the river.
Making contact
In the woods, Bram listens to a radio broadcast that is going out from The Resistance. When he gets back to the cabin, he tells his parents that she’s closer and that they should contact her. The family debates it but decide that it’s too risky to give away their position at this time. Bram is upset as he heads to his room. Snyder follows him, saying that he overheard the conversation and tells him that he should reach out. He says that they can’t survive up there forever.
Later, Katie brings it up to Will when they’re alone. She also says that they can’t stay there forever. She still says that they can’t risk exposing themselves but that there has to be another way. Will then agrees that they should do something. As they think it over there is a loud noise outside.

The crash
As they arrive outside they look up to see a huge space ship of some sort that has been hit and is going down. Following behind the ship are flying drones. The family is unsure what they should do so Will brings Snyder with him to the top of the mountain to check it out before they decide.
At the top of the mountain they reach a ski lift which gives them a clear view. Down below they can see exactly what is happening. It’s a war scene. The drones were not following the ship to help, they were flying in to attack it. Snyder tells him that there was a rumor that The “RAPs” were using the factory to make space weapons. He also says that the large ship was not one of theirs based on the design.
Will realizes that this likely means that the RAPs are at war and that they could potentially join the other side. Snyder compares this to the Japanese siding with the Nazis during WW2 and suggests against it.
The Gauntlet
Down below, Katie and Bram dig up the box containing the gauntlet. Bram begs her to reach out to the resistance and this time asks if she’s in charge or if his dad is. He’s playing them against each other and this will likely come up again.
When they get back to the cabin, Gracie says that they should get rid of the gauntlet so they can stop being followed. When Katie tells her it’s their best shot at getting back to a normal life, doom and gloom Charlies says that the old world is gone.
At that moment, Bram catches communication that appears to be the gray hats planning a strike on them.
Back on the mountain, Will and Snyder walk up on a group of gray hats planning to raid the cabin.
The Escape
Will tells Snyder to head back to the cabin and warn Katie and the kids while he fires on the gray hats to try to lure them away.
Fortunately, back at the cabin the family is already loading up based on Bram’s intercepted radio broadcast. The emergency plan has been initiated.
Bram, Katie, and Will stay at the cabin to keep the grey hats occupied while Snyder takes off with the kids. They create a diversion to make the grey hats think they are still firing from the cabin while they run away.
At one point, Will sends Bram ahead to catch up to Snyder and the kids. When he arrives at the truck, Snyder tells him he’s going to go back to help Will and Katie. However, when they arrive at the truck Snyder is not there. Will says that they have to leave and that Snyder knows where to go.
Snyder is still Snyder
We were led to believe that Snyder was on the side of the Bowmans now but we were lied to. He walks up to the leader of the grey hats who is mad that he called them in. They didn’t want to hear from him until he was at a resistance base. Snyder explains that they clearly aren’t going to find the base but they send him back in with them anyway. The leader pistol whips him so he’ll have a good cover.
When Snyder returns Will is suspicious and starts to question him. He says that the team that hit them was a strike team, which means they knew they were there. Snyder’s story doesn’t quite sound believable but Bram stands up for him and Katie says that they need to keep moving so Will allows him to enter the truck. He’s clearly still suspicious so this will likely come back up.
The Resistance
At the end of the episode, Will has given Bram permission to reach out using the radio. As they reach a roadblock they realize that the trees were cut in half by something that was going down into the woods. Will says they should just go but Katie takes off into the woods so he follows her. This is likely the result of Bram’s questioning who was in charge earlier.
After they leave, someone comes in over the radio and Bram tells them who they are. The lady on the other end says that Noa mentioned their names and gives them a location to meet her.
Meanwhile, Katie and Will come up on a crashed pod. One of the windows is broken and Katie looks inside and asks if that’s what the aliens look like under their uniforms. Unfortunately, we don’t see the being but we do get a close up on the wound that it has just before the episode ends.

Summary
This first episode did not lack for action, tension, or information. We know that the Bowmans had found a place to settle in but that they were having trouble making contact with The Resistance. We also learned that Snyder does still work for the hosts and is working against the Bowmans objective after all. Lastly, we learned that the RAPs (or hosts) are at war with another alien species. Fortunately, Will is already suspicious of Snyder so hopefully he catches onto him before it’s too late. At the same time we have no idea what the alien war is going to mean for the human race.
There is plenty more to learn as the season progresses. If Colony is good at one thing, it’s leaving you with a cliffhanger.
Colony returns next Wednesday at 10/9 Central on USA Network.
