After the events of Avengers: Infinity War left us with a big question mark over Spider-Man, he’s going to return for the Homecoming sequel. At the same time, Spidey’s return could potentially coincide with Venom’s introduction to Sony’s Spider-Verse.

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, you might want to stop reading now. There are spoilers ahead.

But if you have seen it, then you already know Peter Parker (Tom Holland) was one of the heroes who disappeared during Thanos’ culling. Spider-Man didn’t get the big axe — no pun intended, but he’s gone for the foreseeable future.

While Peter Parker is out of the picture, another Spider-centric character will take center stage: Venom. Tom Hardy is making his first appearance as Eddie Brock in Venom where he’ll reportedly take on the Life Foundation in a battle for the Symbiotes. The outcome of their fight hasn’t been revealed but it’ll likely end with Brock victorious. After, Eddie Brock will be in the position to either become a full-fledged villain or an anti-hero.

Whatever he decides to do, Brock will more than likely encounter Spider-Man along the way. The two have fought countless times in the comics, and Holland’s Peter Parker has been rumored to have a small role in Venom. Whether or not these claims hold any truth doesn’t matter, it’s what’ll take place after Venom and Avengers 4 that we should be focused on.

Are Venom and Spider-Man going team up in Homecoming 2?

Assuming Avengers 4 does something to retcon the events of Infinity War, Peter Parker will be brought back. Now, that may consist of any number of colorful explanations but he’s going to come back one way or another. When he does, the ole webhead will get back to the superhero game. At that point, he could fight practically anyone. Though, the one that makes the most sense is Venom. Or, perhaps Spidey and Venom will have to team up against an even bigger villain, maybe Carnage.

Regardless of the who they go up against, a Spider-Man / Venom tag-team in Homecoming 2 seems like the way to go. Their comic origins dictate it and that’s what fans want to see. Plus, it’s not like Sony or Marvel is going to miss out on a major event like a Spider-Man, Venom, and Carnage showdown. Although, Carnage might not be the villain we’re thinking of.

In Venom, the CEO’s in charge of the Life Foundation will be dead-set on creating Symbiotes similar to Eddie brock’s black one. There’s no telling if they’ll succeed but glimpses in the Venom trailer have shown multiple test tubes holding similar-looking substances, thus confirming the creation of more Symbiote samples.

Will the Life Foundation be responsible for creating villains in the Spider-Verse?

If this is the birth of more Symbiotes, they’re likely adaptations of their comic counterparts. Of course, their creation will probably be followed by Eddie Brock defeating them. The thing is, their fight with Venom doesn’t end after just one fight.

In the comics, after the Life Foundation symbiotes are defeated and returned to the lab, they wind up merging with one another. The amalgamation of the four symbiotes creates a new Symbiote known as Hybrid. And it’s that Hybrid symbiote who has the potential to be the big bad in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2.

Next: Is Venom going to introduce more antagonists to the cinematic universe?

As long as the Life Foundation manages to create at least one new Symbiote in Venom, Hybrid could be the big villain that Spider-Man and Venom have to fight. We won’t know until Venom premieres but this is a good time to start considering the possibility. Though, the Life Foundation’s existence seems to be all the proof we need.

Venom opens in theatres on October 5, 2018. Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 will be released on July 5, 2019.
