Designated Survivor: Will the show be saved for a third season?

Designated Survivor was recently canceled by ABC. Will it be able to be saved for a third season?

Presidential shows had never really been appealing to me prior to diving into House of Cards on Netflix. While that show has more than its fair share of problems, it opened me up to shows in the White House. Once Designated Survivor was announced with Kiefer Sutherland in the main role, I decided to give it a shot.

Now that ABC has canceled the show as the second season ends, many people are wondering (including myself) if it’ll see a third season. The second season wasn’t quite as strong as the first, but there were still aspects of it to really dig into and enjoy.

More from ABC

The producing company, eOne, is currently shopping the show around and Netflix is showing an interest in it according to Deadline. With the current state of House of Cards, this could be a good move for Netflix. House of Cards will have it’s final season without Kevin Spacey soon and they could fill the void of a show in the White House with Designated Survivor.

The show was doing well with delayed viewing, but it was the live and same day numbers that were cause for concern at ABC. Kiefer Sutherland is one of the executive producers on the show, so it’s highly likely that he’d stick around should Netflix pick it up for a third season.

One of the other upsides with Netflix is the fact that they could have a little more freedom with how they tell the story. I would be perfectly fine with Netflix picking it up and downsizing the season to 13 episodes. This would allow for a tighter narrative and could help boost the show going forward.

We’ll wait on official word before getting too excited about a third season, but there are a lot of directions it can go in based on what they’ve done in season two.
