Family Matters

During the same era in which Roseanne made ABC the network to watch on Tuesday nights, Family Matters did the thing for Thursday nights. From 1991 to 1997, the series was the lead program on ABC’s indomitable TGIF programming block. If revived today, Family Matters could fill the networks current Tuesday night void.

More from ABC

Initially, the focus of the series was Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson), a policeman who lived in Chicago with his wife and three children. The show had a wacky family/generational conflict vibe that is akin to Modern Family/Black-ish, only much cornier.

However, in the show’s 12th episode, the Winslow’s obnoxious and brilliant neighbor Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) was introduced and became so popular, he became the show’s new central character. As a result of Steve’s antics taking the spotlight, the series gradually became more and more surreal. Near the end of the show’s run, incidents like Steve inventing a potion that turns him into Elvis were no longer remarkable.

If Family Matters were revived and kept the sci-fi material to a minimum, the series could be a nostalgia-fueled hit. And though the series’ general lack of social commentary will keep it from becoming a political lightning rod like Roseanne, its squeaky clean humor and focus on family values might attract Fuller House’s audience.
