To the surprise of many, the first piece of promo art for Avengers 4 has leaked online. In it, the New Avengers are assembled and some of them are sporting new suits. James Rhodes, specifically, is packing a heavily upgraded version of his War Machine armor.

Despite not knowing where the leaked piece of Avengers 4 concept art originated from, it looks legitimate enough. There aren’t any telltale signs of it being fanmade, and all the characters seem to reflect where they left off at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Therefore, it’s safe to say this concept art is of the New Avengers. But before they take on Thanos, some of the Avengers will receive suit upgrades.

The leaked concept art shows Bruce Banner / Hulk is in a bodysuit of some kind. The material has to be able to stretch and withstand the Hulk’s brute force so there’s a good chance Iron Man will equip his pal with a Bleeding Edge suit of his own. Hulk’s suit won’t be as high tech as Stark’s but it’ll very likely be composed of nanites as well.

The other Avenger who appears to have received an upgraded suit of armor is James Rhodes. He’s not wearing the same War Machine armor from Avengers: Infinity War and the new suit might even be Bleeding Edge based.

Will James Rhodes’ new War Machine armor continue to change?

Another explanation for Rhodes’ new armor is that he engineered a new one that’s a meld between his old War Machine armor and the Hulkbuster. The layered on shoulder plates and expanded chest piece give the impression of being as such. Rhodes’ new armor also appears to be packing a pretty heavy duty Gatling gun on his shoulder. It also makes sense for Rhodes to brandish something bigger than his normal suit. If Banner was outmatched while using the Hulkbuster, Rhodes definitely needs a bigger suit. Keep in mind this might not be the final version of Rhodes’ new armor.

Considering this piece of concept art is the earliest of many to come, the War Machine design will probably change over time. Perhaps, this depiction is merely a prototype for the larger armor we’ll actually see in Avengers 4. It does look like a basic War Machine armor with slightly more prominent features where the changes will be. Of course, the final version is still to be seen.

Next: How will the New Avengers respond to Thanos in Avengers 4?

What’s of more interest is where Rhodes will get the new suit from. There’s a chance he’ll engineer it himself but the most logical explanation is that Tony Stark has some Hulkbuster prototypes lying around and it’s one of those. If it is, Rhodes could outfit the armor with his Gatling guns and head off to fight Thanos. Although, my guess is Rhodes will receive access to a special suit of armor that releases automatically when Tony Stark is off the planet.

Avengers 4 opens in theaters on May 8, 2019.
